Proven Benefits of Olive Oil

July 23, 2018

Olive oil is the gourmet product that never ceases to amaze. Although many studies have been carried out into its benefits (its ability to lower cholesterol and blood pressure are renowned), one recent study by the Temple University Health System recently identified one specific attribute of "liquid gold" that was previously unknown: extra-virgin olive oil protects memory and learning ability and reduces the formation of harmful plaques and tangles in the brain—classic signs of Alzheimer’s disease. In this post, we highlight just a few of the many benefits of a food that is as delicious as it is healthy.

olive oil can help prevent diabetes. A 2017 Virginia Tech study found that a compound derived from olive oil called oleuropein can aid in diabetes prevention. It does so by helping the body secrete more insulin, a vital molecule in the body that plays an important role in metabolism. The same compound also detoxifies another important molecule that can contribute to the development of diabetes, which makes olive oil a great ally indeed against a disease that currently affects one in four Canadians.

antioxidants are vital to human health. Oxidation is a process which can cause damage to the body in the form of heart disease and cancer. Olives are full of antioxidants, which have proven anti-ageing and neuroprotective effects. Olives and their derivative, olive oil, are also rich in glutathione (which has a unique ability to recycle antioxidants). Glutathione has been shown to reduce symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, improve insulin resistance in seniors, enhance mobility among those with peripheral artery disease, and improve the immune response.

olive oil and skin health. Consuming olive oil can play an important role in keeping us young and disease-free, but this product can also be used topically owing to its ability to moisturize skin and fight bacteria and inflammation. One product that is popular among beauty buffs is ozonated olive oil, which is used to heal wounds, reduce scars, and battle inflammation. Ozone is added to olive oil for topical use because it has the ability to react with other molecules and break them down; proponents claim it can destroy bacteria, viruses, fungi, and yeast, though more research needs to be undertaken to determine the extent of its beneficial effects.

boosting heart health and keeping cancer at bay. Studies have shown that alongside leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables and berries such as blueberries and goji, herbs and spices such as turmeric, and seasonal fruits and vegetables, olive oil can play an important role in cancer prevention, precisely because of its rich antioxidant quotient. Olive oil is also rich in monounsaturated fats, which helps lower your risk of heart disease. It is vital to opt for good quality olive oil to obtain its full benefits, though; opt for cold-pressed, extra-virgin olive oil or flaxseed oil for their high Omega-3 essential fatty acid quotient.

There are a plethora of olive oil varieties and strengths, so it certainly should be fun experimenting until you find your personal favorite. Olive oil will soon become a vital ingredient in many of your family’s meals; everything from salads to grilled dishes, and stews. Considering this beautifully flavored oil cuts your risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer, it certainly is an important ingredient you can enjoy every day. —Jenny Holt
