Here at Vita Daily we often ask our close girlfriends to review beauty products for us (we trust them to tell us the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth). Here, Sabina dishes on one of her best-kept beauty secrets: using men’s cologne as perfume!
You may remember when, in 1994, Calvin Klein took the beauty world by storm, introducing the first unisex fragrance CK One. It was all the rage, and everyone was intrigued by the fact that a single fragrance could work for both sexes.
Fast-forward to 2012, when I found myself wandering through The Bay on Queen Street in Toronto, killing time before having to head back to work. Passing by the Burberry counter, I picked up a bottle of what I thought was women’s perfume, took a sniff and fell in love. But, when I asked a salesperson to sell me the scent, I was told that, in fact, the "perfume" I wished to purchase was men’s cologne. Still, I was sold and, ever since, I’ve been spritzing myself liberally with carefully selected intended-for-males fragrances. Why? Well, it works for me. I find many perfumes too fruity and floral and, while I’m a girly-girl in many ways, when it comes to fragrances, roses and lavender are not my thing. I prefer a scent that’s smooth, sophisticated and sexy, that lingers on my skin—which many colognes tend to do. Finding just the right fragrance involves some research (i.e., smell tests and more smell tests) but, since hitting on what I believe is my signature scent—Yves Saint Laurent L’Homme Parfum Intense—I’m hooked.
For those of you wanting a change in your swagger and scent, then I suggest strutting to the men’s fragrance section and smell-testing a bottle of something new—starting with my three favourite colognes that work for women, below. —Sabina Srubiski
