When you talk about iconic brands, Disney has to be right up there: kids know that Mickey Mouse silhouette practically from birth. But we’ve always been a bit sniffy about adults who can’t get over the obsession for cutesy princess-emblazoned clobber. And then this year, brands like Coach, Gucci, Levi’s and Uniqlo have joined forces with the Magic Kingdom for collections that are just enough kitsch, without being kiddie.
Disney x Coach: A Dark Fairy Tale, for pre-fall, includes tees and leather goods. Gucci’s spring-summer 2018 collection has a sweater with Snow White eating her poisoned apple, embellished with sequins. And, along with tees and sweatshirts featuring Mickey graphics, Levi’s new collection also includes a special edition Mickey-adorned Trucker jacket.
Hunter, the boot-maker, just announced the release of a limited-edition collection with Disney to celebrate the release of Mary Poppins Returns (we wonder if the umbrella can help us fly?). And Uniqlo continues its ongoing Magic For All collab with a number of ranges. The standout is Mickey Art, which celebrates the famous mouse’s 90th birthday in the form of unique renditions from artists and illustrators around the world.
And how about this "magic moment veil" by Gigi Burris Millinery? Featuring individually applied sequins and Swarovski crystals embellishing the ears, it can replace your old mouseketeer ears for a cool $450 US.
Our top pick? Disney x Coach: A Dark Fairy Tale Signature Patchwork Duffle ($750, available June 1st online and at select Coach stores). It’s emblazoned with the word Grumpy, so it’s perfect for Monday morning. —Aileen Lalor
