Our chat with beauty brand Desavery‘s founder, Andrea Dinnick. —Vita Daily
Hi Andrea! Tell us a bit about yourself and your professional/beauty background.
Hi, up until a few years ago, I really had no experience in the beauty business. My career up until launching Desavery was always in television and media and I have launched TV channels and made lots of programmes working in front of and behind the camera in both Canada and the UK. A few years ago I launched a TV channel all about health and wellness and became immersed in this space. I really wanted to take better care of myself but I found the whole skincare world very confusing and unnecessarily complicated. It kind of felt like I needed to buy into all this science (that I was sceptical about anyway) and then spend a good part of my day managing a nine step skincare regime! I could see there was an opportunity to create products that were really effective with plant-ingredients and work them into a simple and pleasurable routine so I decided to take the plunge and start Desavery. It’s been a crazy first year (almost) but it’s been fantastic. My kids are teenagers now, so I have more time to create and nurture something for the next stage of my life.
Desavery has been called mood-elevating beauty line. Can you explain.
One of the things that I am very interested in is meditation and some of the other ways that we can literally change our biochemistry in order to feel good (exercise, yoga etc). What interested me was the scientific evidence that was being produced to demonstrate that these activities can make you more effective in your daily life. I had an idea that if I could create a product that in addition to providing great skincare could also impact your mood then that would be a product I personally would love to use.
In what ways does Desavery harness the principles of plant science to deliver simple and impactful skincare.
As I mentioned, I’m not a chemist nor did I have experience in the beauty world which was actually a good thing because instead of looking at how different ingredients work together in a formula (which is what the chemists do when they create a new skincare product), I was focussing on how ingredients impact the user and it was here that I discovered there was a lot of scientific research that showed inhaling certain plant ingredients has a measurable effect on many aspects of our biochemistry. For instance, rosemary boosts cognition, bergamot lowers cortisol levels and vetiver helps with focus and concentration. I set myself a challenge to incorporate these concepts within a skincare product so that using the products provided multiple benefits.
Small batch, sustainably sourced and socially responsibly producer how do those term apply to Desavery?
In order for the plant ingredients to have a great impact, they need to be of the highest quality, plus I wanted a brand where I could truly say the origin and production of the ingredients was of the highest standard. I realised the only way for me to do this was if I directly sourced the ingredients myself. Our prickly pear seed oil comes from an amazing co-op in Morocco where all the Berber women who work there have literacy and childcare support plus they send it to me a few weeks after pressing so that it’s completely fresh. ‘Small batch’ production means that we are making the product and selling it as soon as we get the ingredients. Something I learned about the beauty business is that most cosmetics are made in huge production runs once a year or even less meaning lots of preservatives are required and sadly most of the beauty companies use the same 7 or 8 factories around the world so consumers aren’t really getting anything that innovative or fresh.
