Ready, Set, CoolSculpt

July 24, 2019

While we are true believers in a) loving and nurturing ourselves at all times and b) doing what we can (read: maintaining healthy eating habits and a pretty active lifestyle) to keep our bodies feeling and looking good, we must admit that, no matter how diligent we try to be, there are some tricky places on our bods (those pesky love handles, muffin top, bra bulges and so-called banana rolls) that we’d gladly accept a little extra help with.

Enter CoolSculpting—the science-fiction-y-sounding "fat-freezing" technology that provides a non-surgical way to reduce pockets of fat in trouble spots like the abdomen, flanks or under the chin in as little as one session. We tried this treatment courtesy of Carruthers & Humphrey Cosmetic Dermatology in Vancouver and are pleased to report: CoolSculpting is the real deal.

Our session started with a consult to determine what our areas of concern were and decide where the procedure would produce the best results. Having settled on our inner thighs, we took a set of "before" photos before assuming a comfortable seat by the CoolSculpting machine. Our gams were gooped with jelly (not unlike the stuff used in an ultrasound) before a paddle-like device was strapped to our thighs. Then came the cooling: a low-temp, tingling sensation that did not hurt one iota and that works to freeze fat cells that the body will naturally, within a few months, eliminate—for good. We walked out of the clinic without any pain or discomfort (although there was some expected tenderness in the days that followed).

Several weeks later we were back for our followup, which included "after" photos. While we had noticed a difference on our own (you know, in the shower, in the mirror at the yoga studio, in our summer shorts), the proof was in those pictures: leaner and, to us, lovelier legs. In fact, if you want to get into the nitty gritty of it, CoolSculpting can result in up to 25 per cent reduction of fat in a treated area. And, if we maintain that healthy diet and fitness regime we spoke about earlier going forward, we’re golden.

Pretty cool, right?! —Noa Nichol
