New Nosh: 1931 Gallery Bistro

December 8, 2019

The Vancouver Art Gallery café has, for years, been a fave nosh spot for locals; in summer especially, the ample, sun-drenched patio is a hidden gem. And, after a reno this fall, the space has reopened as 1931 Gallery Bistro—a name, inspired by the VAG’s opening year, which pays tribute to eight decades of cultural contribution.

The redesign is a modern contrast to the historical building, featuring exposed concrete, white walls and plenty of open space. The seasonal menu includes plenty of options, too: grab-and-go items, breakfast, lunch and, newly, dinner (complete with an extensive cocktail and wine list). After a gallery visit, go for a galette (double-smoked bacon or roasted fig and apple) with a lavender London Fog for breaky, waffles or vegetable stone bread with a mimosa for brunch, the "Vegetable Delivery Truck" sandwich or cauliflower steak bowl for lunch and, for dinner, a chacuterie board for two.

Masterpiece meals, indeed! —Lyndi Barrett
