Alberta Premium is one of the few North American producers of pure rye whisky, and we had the privilege to sample their limited-edition aged 20-year edition.
Rye whisky has a distinctive nose. This one is bright and not too flowery (compared, for instance, with Crown Royal’s Northern Harvest Rye). There is also a deep undertone of caramel and ripe fruits, rounding up the experience. The whisky is of moderate complexity. It tastes of caramel and is remarkably smooth. Although it is aged for two decades, there is almost no detectable spice. It goes down very easily, and leaves a bright aftertaste, perfect for any food pairing.
From the bilingual label to the modest price (around $80), Alberta Premium’s 20-Year-Old is an excellent and straightforward Canadian offering of rye whisky. —Guillaume Garih
