Hi Yael! Tell us a bit about yourself. How did you become a microblading master?

Brows are big business! Microblading is becoming a second career choice for many women. I used to be a hair stylist but saw an opportunity in cosmetic tattooing. In 2018, when I first opened Brows By Yael, I had no idea I would be booked months in advance. Also, although the industry is unregulated, I recently launched workshops that offers certifications for microbladers. The program follows a high set of standards that women should look for before choosing a microblader.

Why is microblading so big right now?

During the 1990s, the trend was thinly plucked eyebrows. The problem is that some of those hairs didn’t fully come back and as you get older we lose hair growth. Nowadays, we are seeing women seeking out fuller eyebrows. Some women spend up to 15 to 20 minutes a day drawing them on. That’s where microblading comes in.

What do you find most women are looking for when they come to you for a consultation?

Women are always looking for something that is an enhancement of their natural shape. They’re not trying to look different or makeup-y. They’re seeking a younger, fresher version of themselves. Permanent makeup is a great way to achieve this effortlessly, all while minimizing our morning cosmetic routine.

What are the differences between microblading and powder brows, and what does a woman need to know before deciding what procedure to get?

Microblading gives the look of hair strokes using a fine row of nano-needles that create a shallow cut in the skin, which is then filled with pigment. Powder brows give a beautifully soft filled-in look, or a more defined look, depending on what the client is looking for. It’s similar to the look of using a light veil of brow shadow, and a machine is used for this style. A combination of microblading and powder brows is often used when extra fullness and depth are needed.

What should women look for when choosing a professional microblader?

People should absolutely take on the role of smart consumer and do their research. Inquire about what pigments are being used. Also, pay close attention the brow style an artist is known for, or what they present in their portfolios and social media, as that’s likely the brow style you’re going to get. If you’re going for a natural look, or more of a makeup look, find artists whose work mirrors what you like. In my shop, all of the artists work hard to create the most natural look possible. I also cannot stress enough the importance of cleanliness. We only use disposable products in our shop, for the most safe and sterile environment. Not everybody does. Eliminating opportunity for cross-contamination is essential, so never feel shy about asking a shop to explain their cleaning practices.

Let’s move onto permanent eyeliner: what is it?

This service provides such a gorgeous spark to the eye, giving the appearance of a fuller lash line. It’s perfect for anyone looking for a bright-eyed, refreshed look. This can be done very subtly, or a bit bolder, taking that pesky step of apply eyeliner out of your morning routine.

What about our lips?

I love lip blush! It’s such a fantastic way to add a pop of colour to the lips, without looking like you’re wearing anything more than a tinted balm. We have an array of pigments, which are blended to give you the most beautiful, natural tone enhancement. We only stay inside the vermillion, which is the lip’s natural border, so you’ll never have that “permanent lip liner” look.

Is there anything else you would like women to know about cosmetic tattooing or microblading?

Permanent makeup, especially with these modern techniques, isn’t something to be afraid of! There’s this taboo surrounding the world of permanent makeup, as we tend to think of our grandma’s blue eyebrows. If you do your research, you can be sure you end up in the best hands. Also, as women we tend to put everyone else first and our needs fall to the wayside. We have every right to take care of ourselves and feel beautiful. It’s about time we put ourselves first and express self-love!

What other questions should we be asking and you feel women want to hear before committing any of the procedures?

You want an artist that wants to continue to grow and constantly find ways to better their skillset. Passion is so important, and will always be demonstrated in one’s work. Find an artist that loves what they do, works hard to improve their art, and you’ll likely end up with some pretty killer brows!
