What do many Canadian female fashion and beauty entrepreneurs have in common? The fact that they graduated from programs at Blanche Macdonald school in Vancouver! We chatted with four alum, including Tayler Rogers of Midnight Paloma, about their businesses, and what it takes to be an awesome, trailblazing boss! —Vita Daily
Hi Tayler! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.
Hi! I’m Tayler. Founder of Midnight Paloma, new mom and clean beauty enthusiast.
What’s your company, Midnight Paloma, all about?
Our main goal at Midnight Paloma is making natural beauty fun, inviting and easy to navigate.
What makes your mandate/perspective, as a female entrepreneur, unique?
I think my perspective is unique in that I’ve really come full circle from where my career started off. I was a customer, a sales employee, a store owner and now I’m creating the products that I myself used to buy, sell and market. It helps me because I can think about the perspective and how it will be interpreted on every level. Beauty is a complicated platform and as a woman marketing to other women I think transparency is the most important message we should be using. I try to always have that as a mandate for Midnight Paloma.
How do you/does your business empower other women?
One thing that has been so fun with Midnight Paloma is how many other small businesses I’ve connected with. Through social media or events, I’ve been able to meet other female entrepreneurs and really embrace the "collaboration versus competition" mentality. I’ve met some amazing people, become their cheerleaders and vice versa. It’s so inspiring to see where everyone is going and how they are growing their companies.
The relationship between feminism and beauty can be, well, complicated; how do you reconcile the two, personally?
Feminism and beauty are definitely complicated. The traditional ideals behind both are technically completely different. I think caring for yourself is empowering. Self care is something that makes me feel good from the inside out. I don’t do it to look younger, I do it because it gives me confidence and for me that is what the whole beauty industry should be about.
How did Blanche Macdonald figure in your education/career?
I was always super interested in the makeup side of my program and definitely thought that’s where my career would be headed after graduating from Blanche. The retail industry was something I didn’t really know existed as an option for me. Had I not seen the job posting at Blanche for BeautyMark I would have never gotten into retail. Flash forward 15 years, I now have my own line. It’s wild but I wouldn’t be where I am today without going through that process.
Final, personal question: your fave beauty product or pleasure at the moment?
I’m a new mom, so finding the time for me is something that I’m trying every night to make a priority. Our Gua Sha tool and Face Oil is my five-minute routine that really helps me unwind and I look forward to it every night once I get my little guy down. It really helps me destress and preps my mind for some quiet time.
