A New Spin On Essie’s Classics

April 22, 2020

Ever wondered what it would be like to put a modern twist on your all-time-fave essie shades? Well now you can! For a limited time only, the Originals Remixed Collection by essie includes six of the brand’s most-beloved and iconic shades reimagined and “remixed” to create their perfect complement look while still bursting with personality. We chatted with essie’s global lead educator Rita Remark about the range, and asked her what her dream shade would be. —Vita Daily

Hi Rita! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.

I’m a freelance editoral manicurist. In 2012 I was appointed the lead nail artist for essie Canada and advanced to become the brands global lead educator in 2015. My work has been featured in Harpers Bazaar, Marie Claire, ELLE Canada, FASHION, Jolie Germany and more. Since 2014, I’ve been designing and leading nails teams backstage at New York and London fashion week, working with designers like Alexander Wang, Erdem, Christian Siriano, Proenza Schouler, Oscar De la Renta and many others. My celebrity clientele include Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, JVN and Meghan Markle. Along with my work on set, I’m passionate about education and regularily host nail seminars and workshops globally with essie and on camera as a guest expert on ET Canada, Cityline and Global news.

With plenty of time on our hands (read: to do our nails, of course!), we’re of the opinion that the essie Originals Remixed range has dropped at a pretty opportune time. Can you tell us more about the collection, please?

The remixed collection is a celebration of the most timeless and beloved essie shades. From ballet slippers to wicked, the colours have all been given contemporary counterparts with complementary iridescent, shimmering or metallic effects.

How were the six colours chosen? What makes them essie’s "most popular" shades?

Year after year, these six shades have proven to be among the most purchased, awarded, “hashtagged” and gifted essie polishes. Also, the fact that the colours are classic, pink and neutral toned shades, makes it even more fun to add a new spin to them!

Tough question: what’s your fave shade from the new collection, and why?

I love below zero! Smokin’ hot is one of the most-used shades in my kit and adding a splash of shifting iridescent shimmer to the classic mix breathes life into my old favourite.

Top (nail) tips for playing with this range?

Remember that these are all formulated with the classic essie lacquer, so they apply and wear best when polished between base and topcoat. These pairings also make mani/pedi co-ordination a breeze! Try wearing ballet sneakers on your feet and ballet slippers on your hands!

Final question: if you could create a nail colour, what it would look like and what would you call it?

Now THIS is an impossible question. I’m consistently amazed at the creativity of the essie development team—I’m nowhere near as clever! Green is my favourite colour, so if I had to make a signature shade, it’d probably be a deep forest green creme with a name that incorporates my last name, like “make your Re-mark” or “Remarkable”!
