Whether we’re in isolation-time or not, a scattered morning can throw off your entire day. A few regular morning rituals go a long way in grounding us and getting us set for the day ahead, whether you’re working from home or just chilling on the couch. A morning routine doesn’t need to involve getting up at the crack of dawn to exercise for hours or being stuck with a rigorous schedule—it’s all about finding the few right things that work for you. Try some of these simple ideas for establishing your own morning routine and setting yourself up for a great day ahead. —Jeanine Gordon
drink up. A successful morning can be as simple as getting hydrated. Fill up your water bottle or down a couple of big glasses of water right when you wake up. If a blast of cold water is too much to bear, try warm water with a squeeze of lemon. Either way, you’ll be well on your way to your hydration goals and will feel refreshed and ready to tackle the day.
move your body. Hear us out—morning exercise can be whatever you want, including getting out for a short stroll around your neighbourhood or doing some gentle stretches on a yoga mat in your living room. You don’t need to be hardcore about it—as long as you start moving your body for a few minutes to get your blood flowing, you’re doing great.
take a mental reset. Mornings are a great time to unload your mind. Some people take 10 minutes to journal about whatever is on their mind or set a positive intention for the day, while others might prefer to sit in quiet meditation. Even a few minutes can make a big difference in your mental state as you begin your day. If you’re feeling stuck, try jotting down three things that you’re grateful for.
make your coffee (or tea!) matter. Rather than pounding a coffee while you aimlessly scroll your social media, take the time to ditch your phone and just sip and savour. A few moments of quiet mindfulness will let you enjoy each sip without going into auto-pilot.
