When it comes to sunglasses and smaller faces, Nerissa Jawanda saw a gap in the market and knew there was something she could do to fill it. Callula Co. is known for its premium line of perfect-fit petite sunglasses—they’re handcrafted and provide 100 per cent UV protection, to boot. Hi Nerissa! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.
I’m the founder of petite sunglasses brand Callula Co. My background is in public relations and communications. I’m originally from the west coast, where I attended UBC. My interest in the fashion and beauty industry brought me to Toronto, where I’ve grown my career and started my business!
Why did you launch Callula Co? What are petite sunglasses and how did you first identify this market gap?
I launched the brand after years of struggling to find eyewear that flattered my face type. I noticed that women with smaller and more-narrow faces are often overlooked and more of an afterthought in the eyewear space. I set out to create a line of fashionable sunglasses to fill this gap in the market and help women with petite faces feel confident and look beautiful in sunglasses made just for them.
In terms of style/design, from where do you pull your inspo?
I love visiting vintage eyewear shops for inspo. Instagram and Pinterest are also great. We work with an eyewear designer based in Brooklyn, whose ideas and insight provide lots of inspo as well.
What are some top trends (and corresponding Callula styles) coming up for summer?
Some of the hottest trends we’re seeing for summer are warm tones, vibrant colours and polished silhouettes. If you’re looking for a pop of colour, I’d recommend our Sweet As Honey sunglasses in milky beige. The golden-yellow lenses make them perfect for a playful summer look.
What shades are you currently rocking?
I’ve been reaching for our Northern Lights sunglasses most often! I love the mirrored lenses and how easy they are to dress up or down.
