The Room Relaunch At Hudson’s Bay

September 18, 2020

The official relaunch of The Room within Hudson’s Bay in downtown Vancouver includes an extensive reno, exceptional updates to the brand matrix and the intro of menswear collections (a first for The Room that you won’t even find in in Toronto!). We chatted with Tyler Franch, fashion director for Hudson’s Bay, about this exciting project as we make our way into the fall season. —Noa Nichol

Hi Tyler! Thanks for chatting. So, what’s new at The Room within Hudson’s Bay in downtown Vancouver?

We’re bringing a reimagined luxury shopping experience to our Vancouver customer through a beautifully renovated space and an elevated product assortment that—for the first time—includes menswear collections with brands like Lanvin, Balmain and JW Anderson. We’ve also introduced an extension of designer products on thebay.com, which allows Canadians outside of the city centre to shop our luxury offering.

How has Hudson’s Bay curated the collections in The Room to appeal specifically to the Vancouver market?

The Vancouver customer is more open to novelty fashion and streetwear, so we have tailored the brand and product assortment to reflect this. There is a dedicated space within The Room spotlighting designers from around the world, such as emerging Korean brands like KUHO, Low Classic, Andersson Bell and, exclusive to The Room, Yuul Yie.

Why was The Room in Vancouver chosen as the first to carry menswear collections (ahead even of Toronto!)?

We are always focused on elevating the customer experience, and we felt that it was time to create a more inclusive luxury shopping experience for all. While we have started in Vancouver, The Room Toronto is always top of mind.

What makes visiting The Room an Instagram-worthy experience?

The renovated space is really an extension of each designer’s brand DNA, told through uniquely conceptualized spaces. At 13,700 square feet, we wanted to ensure that every turn had a new, luxurious element to it. Elements include: a floor-to-ceiling silver room with industrial appliqués and interchangeable fixtures; superior merchandising; tailored accessories walls for men and women; and a vibrant blue cage that houses a photo-worthy designer T-shirt pop up!

What should we be grabbing from The Room to add to our fall wardrobes?

As we spend more time working from home, “keyboard dressing” has become increasingly important. One way that your style can translate over Zoom is to choose tops with elements of drama. Act nº1’s Balloon-Sleeve Shirt is a great piece to add to your rotation. Additionally, today, the consumer is looking for comfortable, versatile pieces with a seasonless appeal. A neutral sweater dress like the Nanushka Canaan Sweater Dress is a great way to blend comfort and style.
