Though most women are intimately familiar with menstruation, did you know that your period creates waste and can be harmful to the environment, depending on the type of hygiene products that you use? Here are some eco-friendly alternatives to make your time of the month more Mother Earth friendly! —Amanda Nunes

knix. This all-Canadian company has you covered—literally. The brand’s new super leakproof underwear lets you replace pads with absorbent panties that you can swap out to match your flow (the most absorbent pair holds eight teaspoons of liquid). Best of all, they come in a variety of styles, like boy shorts or thongs ($34), so you can still feel cute.

diva cup. The Diva Cup ($40) is one of the most well-known eco-friendly period products around. This soft silicone cup can be worn for up to 12 hours and comes in three different sizes to suit your age and flow. There are no added chemicals or dyes, and it’s reusable, so you save money (and reduce waste) in the long run.

period aisle. These reusable maxi pads ($19) come in a variety of super-cute prints and patterns and three sizes, with each pad capable of holding the equivalent of up to four tampons. Made in Canada out of breathable cotton, simply throw them into the washing machine to clean, and feel good knowing you’re keeping approximately 238 disposable pads our of the landfill!

lunettes. These menstrual cups ($39 US) offer a stylish alternative to a Diva Cup. The silicone cup is a little more firm and comes in several bright colours like purple, blue and orange (plus a matching pouch). Each cup is easy to clean, is made with medical-grade silicone and can be worn for 12 hours a day.

thinx. Stay comfy and dry at night with Thinx Sleep Shorts ($69). These cosy boxer-style shorts have built-in super absorbency so you can rest worry-free, and can hold the equivalent of four tampons. Best of all, they have pockets!
