Beyond her work in health care, Sunbal Mumtaz makes modern, multicultural jewelry under her Sunbalm label, integrating her South Asian background into her designs. Each necklace is adjustable, transforming easily from a choker style to one that can be worn long. Just glide the “knot” on the strand up or down to your desired length. We chatted with Sunbal about her work, and we’re giving you a chance to win! —Vita Daily
Hi Sunbal! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.
My parents immigrated to Canada from Pakistan in the 1970s; I was born and raised in Ontario. I love travelling—learning about and experiencing different cultures first hand. I completed my masters of science and currently work in health care, while pursuing this passion business of mine.
When and why did you launch Sunbalm Jewelry?
I launched Sunbalm Jewelry in 2019, wanting merge and fuse my South Asian and Canadian identities into my pieces, and to showcase inclusiveness and diversity in each of my creations. Growing up here, and being of Muslim faith as well as a visible minority, I did not see much diversity in fashion, television, etc. With my craft, I see and have an opportunity to flip that script.
What does your collection offer, and what makes your jewelry modern and multicultural?
Right now I am focusing on my necklaces, each of which have beautifully coloured adjustable threaded strands and different combinations of gemstones, beads, pearls and chains. You can wear them choker style or longer, so they’re fun to play with and layer. The multicultural part comes from the fact that the strands that are included in every Sunbalm necklace are inspired by Pakistani and Indian doris—the strands that provide support for those cultures’ heavy gold jewelry designs.
What inspires you?
My global travels have inspired me; seeing how beautiful and different jewelry is in Pakistan and Turkey has brought great insight when I design my own. Another inspiration is my parents, who, though having immigrated to Canada with nothing, saw their hard work and dedication pay off for their children. When customers purchase and wear my designs, it really brings a lot of joy. It reminds me of the roots that have paved this opportunity for me.
What pieces will you be rocking this winter/holiday season?
For me, the more shimmer and flash the better! Any of Sunbalm’s gold-chain necklaces fit the bill; the minimal gold-filled ones with pearls are also great for the holiday season. As well, the thick chains with the Tiger Eye and black onyx stones will easily glam up any outfit! If I can’t decide on one (which is usually the case) I will layer multiple styles up!
Win! A Sunbalm Jewelry Necklace!
We have a winner! Congrats Michelle L. of Surrey, B.C., who will receive one of Sunbalm Jewelry’s recently launched necklaces!
