What, you ask, is an everyday wardrobe essential? We asked an expert. According to Calgary-based womenswear brand founder Emma May, it’s a “versatile piece that can be worn in a multitude of environments without ever making you feel over or underdressed.
“We all want those pieces that feel comfortable and look good, especially now when people are working from home but also need to go out to run errands,” says Emma, whose label, SophieGrace, has just launched its capsule collection of everyday wardrobe essentials across Canada. “I want to make clothes that make women feel totally themselves in.”
Indeed, Emma, who balances being a mom, a lawyer, a business owner and a community activist, created SophieGrace to fill a need in her own life: “I found myself standing in my closet getting ready and I wondered why I didn’t have an ivory pencil skirt and a perfectly matching blouse. As a professional woman, my wardrobe mainly consisted of mix-and-match separates to create uniforms that could take me from work to dinner with the kids. There wasn’t a line that focused on everyday essential pieces in consistent colour palettes so I set out to create it.”
Her newly launched core range does just that, featuring (currently) 14 key styles—three dresses, two pants, a pencil skirt, four blouses, two sweaters and two blazers, all available in both black and ivory and crafted from beautiful, durable fabrics—that are designed to work together in various combinations and pair seamlessly into existing wardrobes.
“We dye our fabrics to match and will continue to do so as we expand our neutral colour palette,” Emma explains. “This means that each piece in the collection works well with the others which saves time on outfit planning and styling. I also want to create pieces that women gravitate towards over and over again.”
And here’s a stylish surprise: inspired by strong, successful women, each piece is named after iconic woman including Rosa Parks, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Audrey Hepburn!
Ultimately, Emma says, this collection is for “every woman who is defined by more than her job, her relationship or parental status. It is a collection made to address all elements of a women’s life.” As for the brand founder’s can’t-live-without piece?
“I think The Ruth Blouse in black ($150) is such a simple, chic and comfortable choice at the moment,” she says, pointing to the working-from-home reality most of us find ourselves in. “It feels like pajamas but looks completely elevated and professional, whether on a Zoom call for work or meeting a friend for a virtual wine night.”
We’ll cheers to that! —Vita Daily
