Hi Talia! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.

I grew up in Vancouver and now live on Vancouver Island with my son. From a young age, I was always interested in art and design. After completing a photography degree from ECUAD, I began working for a local jewelry company. That’s when I realized how much I enjoy metalsmithing. Shortly after, I moved to Japan where I taught myself more jewelry-making techniques and also came up with the concept of Love Medals. I care deeply about doing meaningful work. Love Medals a wonderful way for me to have creative expression while helping to bring more love into our world.

When, why and how did you start designing jewelry?

It was while I was living in Japan that I decided to set up my own jewelry studio when returning to Canada. Until that time, I would prepare by sketching out any and all ideas that came to mind; inspired by nature, markets, and “non-fashion” accessories, such as medals. Creatively speaking, I enjoy working with my hands and going through the process of visualizing a design and physically creating it. Spiritually speaking, I believe Love Medals is my calling: to help people celebrate love in all its forms. Life’s challenges and blessings, have brought me to understand how essential it is to see and honour ourselves and each other.

When did you launch Love Medals, and what’s the brand all about? What pieces do you currently offer, and what makes your designs unique?

I made my first official Love Medals collection in 2008, and put it on hold immediately after to pursue another career opportunity. I always knew I would return to Love Medals, and was able to relaunch last year in October. I believe love changes the world, person by person, action by action. I make Love Medals as a way for people to honour the love they see in the world and acknowledge the good people do. They are currently available as medals, pins and necklaces. Bracelets and earrings are coming soon! Love Medals are unique because they are a representation of your unique life story, your relationships and experiences. The intention with which the Love Medal is awarded defines the piece.

Dr. Bonnie Henry was gifted a Love Medal for Leadership; to show deep appreciation and gratitude for her guidance as Provincial Health Officer of British Columbia. I have a great amount of respect for Dr. Henry and am thrilled whenever I see her wearing her Love Medal on TV. It’s a wonderful acknowledgement in return, and I feel deeply honoured.
