How To Create A Holiday Makeup Look With Dior Celebrity MUA Ricky Wilson

December 3, 2020

We tapped Dior celebrity makeup artist Ricky Wilson for his top holiday-look tips (with a nod to New Year, too)! —Vita Daily

Hello Ricky! Please tell us a little bit about yourself to start.

I have been doing makeup around the world for many years now working backstage as well as getting celebrities ready for red carpet events. My beauty philosophy is have fun with it because it washes off!!

The ho-ho-holidays are coming! In-person parties may be out, but do you think there’s still a desire or, perhaps, a need (in terms of maintaining some sense of joy/normalcy) for makeup?

Absolutely! This year has taught us so much about ourselves. I think April to June were really good wellness months, and July to present we have seen a return to glam makeup. While it may not be putting your foot all the way down on the gas pedal we can still create gorgeous Zoom-friendly holiday looks. At the end of the day makeup is an escape. Something that is fun to play in and for those of you at home working, playing in makeup should be your happy place! Also can you imagine having this much time to practice new beauty looks? When everything goes back to normal you will be the highlight of any in-person gala!

That said, we’re still planning on getting gorgeous for the festive season (even if it’s just for Zoom)! What are your top tips to create a holiday makeup look?

Zoom makeup doesn’t have to be as elaborate thanks to the touchup my appearance feature (if you didn’t know about that feature, you’re welcome). But we do need a few things to look fab for festive holiday Zoom functions (and if you are attending multiple Zoom parties you may want to switch up the lipstick and tops but stick to the same yoga pants):

  • Skin perfecting cream for quick and easy blurring of pores and redness; try Dior Capture Totale Dreamskin, one of my absolute faves
  • Concealer is a must for Zoom and can be sheered out to double as a lightweight foundation. Gotta look awake even if you got up a few minutes before.
  • Golden eyeshadow is probably the most versatile colour on all skin tones as it adds a flashlight effect to anyone’s eyes; try Dior 5 Couleurs in Golden Snow limited edition
  • Mascara mascara mascara! A nice dark-black mascara with curling ability is always great for zoom. I like to apply two coats and let them dry between to prevent clumping. I love Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara
  • I know some of us are wearing masks but we need lipstick to complete the look. And now they are selling these guards so that the lipstick doesn’t get messy under a mask. Shades of red cranberry and neutral rose should have you holiday ready! Try Rouge Dior Golden Nights limited-edition lip set

Lips may be hidden by masks, but we’d still like our eyes to party pop this Christmas and, next, New Year. Advice for that?

In addition to the tips above regarding gold I would say you can amp up the eyes for NYE by adding silver shadows to the lids and a decent amount of eyeliner for a festive NYE look!

Looking ahead, what beauty/makeup trends do you see coming up for (a hopefully return-to-normal) 2021?

Lipstick is coming back! Thank god, I have never seen so many people not wearing lipstick in all my life. Also glowing skin trend and watercolour makeup will be trending for spring!
