6 Home Items To Hygge Your Space During Lockdown

December 29, 2020

Despite the challenges 2020 has presented, there’s been a silver lining: throughout the pandemic, with Canadians confined to their bubbles, hygge (a Danish term that defines a mood of cosiness) has been reintroduced after it first started trending in 2016. If you’ve been on the hunt for new home items that will help ease your quarantine, you’re in luck: there’s a number of multi-functional pieces on the market that are as practical as they are snug. From weighted blankets to comfortable seats, here’s five Canadian-made décor finds that will help you hygge your space for lockdown. —Anastasia Barbuzzi

Designed in collaboration with Oregon-based Studio Gorm, new EQ3 bar carts come in light natural wood, rich walnut and deep black oak to give off warm, fuzzy vibes. Treat yours as a serving cart, a mobile side table, or remove the top and use it as a tray for NYE dinner.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Campaign for Wool (patroned by The Prince of Wales), this handcrafted rug was created by Canadian interior design experts Sarah Richardson and Creative Matters Inc. Drawn to highlight the benefits of this important natural fibre—a renewable resource from which lanolin is produced—the Origin Rug takes inspiration from shorn sheep wool.

For anyone who lives in a small space, installing an electric fireplace is a sensible solution to not having a built-in unit. The Chateau Corner Electric Fireplace is classical in design and comes in three colours: white, espresso, and dark walnut. It can be conveniently tucked into the corner of a room and creates life-like crackling flames (minus the wood burning experience). Plus, it acts as a supplemental heat source on the chilliest nights, filling up to 1,000 square feet with warm air. Grab your favourite blanket and cuddle up.

Speaking of blankets, this natural cotton weighted throw from Silk & Snow provides you with the comfort of a traditional weighted blanket, made without synthetic materials and pesky glass pellets. Available in eight to 25 pounds and four different colours, the beautiful handwoven pattern is gloriously chunky and toasty too. You’ll never want to watch Netflix without it again.

Toronto-based Stacklab creates home furnishings and art pieces that address relevant environmental, social, and economic issues. The design firm’s new Felt Collection is a collab with premium Merino wool makers, metal manufacturers and programmers that use a computer aided system to transform surplus felted wool into unique household furnishings like stools, side tables and chairs. This emerald-coloured bench offers a durable, agreeable seat to anyone in your household, and it also happens to be festive.

A little bit of fragrance ties everything together, so what better way to promote hygge throughout your home than with a signature scent? By Poetry of the Gods, this custom coconut wax blend infused with vanilla, peony, and aged paper “transports you to an Oxford library where you shelter in silence amidst aromas of leather and old books,” according to Mi’kmaq creative Melissa Della Porta. Poured inside a drink-safe vessel, you can enjoy a hot tea with your novel once the wick reaches its end.
