It’s 2021, and out with old, in with the new—especially when it comes to our indoor décor. For a little expert help in this department, we chatted with Vancouver-based interior designer, Gillian Segal, known for her modern-meets-eclectic glamour style, to get her take on what’s in, what’s out, what’s going and what will be around forever. —Vita Daily
Hi Gillian! How would you describe your style/aesthetic (in interiors, in fashion, and in life)?
I am a big advocate of the style that I like to call, “modern eclectic glamour.” When it comes to interiors, fashion, and life, I’m all about celebrating and blending the old and new and incorporating unique and inspiring details—whether this is through art, jewelry, home or anything in-between. I like to push the boundaries in all aspects of my life and continuously be at the forefront of innovation when it comes to design. There’s something so special about one-of-a-kind shapes, patterns, materials, textures and a sophisticated balance between masculine and feminine details.
Speaking of interior style, in 2021, what’s in, what’s out and what will be around forever? Top trends for the year, in your opinion, will be?
Lots of earthy palettes and textures will be in this year! Think the continuation of plaster and travertines and lots of rattan. Camels in lieu of grey and lots of deep neutralized hues like olive green and burnt orange. Organic shapes and curves in our furnishings and architecture will continue to gain popularity. I also believe that the use of marble will be here to stay. This classic material is timeless and never goes out of style. That being said, expect to see less of the usual Calacatta and statuario and more dramatic stone slabs with bold veining and even colour. For the kitchen, I anticipate more dramatic and unusual natural stones and marbles as well as curved edges and seriously layered textural schemes. For the bathroom, we will see thick countertops and more use of colour along with arched details such as mirrors and shower doors.
What are your top tips for incorporating these trends into our spaces easily?
I highly recommend incorporating trends with accessories and fewer investment pieces. This way, when you are sick of your space or it feels like it is going out of style, it is easy to switch out!
We’re feeling pretty good about Pantone’s Colour(s) of the Year picks! Your thoughts on these, and any plans to use them as part of your personal palette in 2021?
I don’t use a lot of greys—I prefer warmer grey tones rather than a cool grey like “ultimate grey.” I like “illuminating” because it’s a happy colour! While I can’t say I see myself using a lot of these colours in my own projects, I tend to gravitate toward more muted mustard tones when it comes to yellow.
