With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we tapped Benjamin Moore colour marketing expert Sharon Grech for tips to transform our space with inviting hues that simply scream love. —Vita Daily
Hi Sharon! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.
I live and work from my home in Toronto with my husband, two teens and 11-month-old puppy! I have always been intrigued by colour. My training began with decorating my own childhood bedroom on a budget (several times) followed by more formal training with a degree in fine art and art history.
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, what special hues have you chosen to mark the occasion?
I love the warmth of sunbaked tones, especially clays that are so popular today and fitting for a cosy Valentine’s Day! Some of my current favourites are from Benjamin Moore’s 2021 Trend Palette, Potters Clay and Foggy Morning that contrast beautifully with the warm Atrium White. As I find myself dreaming of travel, a mid-range pink, Tofino Sunset will round out the palette.
How do you recommend we use these colours to transform our space?
Any of these four colours will bring warmth to walls, certainly a bedroom comes to mind, paired with soft, cosy linens. However, they are surprisingly versatile hues for any living space, certainly on and well beyond Valentine’s Day! Foggy Morning is a great choice for any room you want to add an uplifting, pale neutral, outside of white or gray walls. Complement with white furnishings and black accents for a more modern, graphic feel or wood and heavy textures for something more rustic. Potters Clay is a rich and earthy mid-tone, suitable for a kitchen accent, dining or even living room walls. I would love to see Tofino Sunset bathing a ceiling with Atrium White walls in a bed or bath environment.
How do these four shades fit in, decor wise, past Love Day? Beyond walls, how else can we use paint to decorate?
Ceilings are often neglected, yet they provide such a wonderful opportunity for a hit or even a subtle canopy of colour! With so many of us spending more time at home, painting furniture is also a simple DIY project. Often, we own neglected odds and ends such as chairs, stools and side tables that can take on a whole new life and purpose in the right colour and a new locale! I have painted many a piece in my home from small stools to a large dining room buffet with Benjamin Moore’s Advance Paint. It is an easy to use and clean up Waterborne Alkyd paint that cures to a durable hard finish and is available in any colour.
