National Donut Day Design (Win!)

In celebration of National Donut Day (today!), Tim Hortons has teamed up with 10 artists across Canada to create their interpretation of an iconic Tims donut, including Vancouver’s very own Jag Nagra, who created a piece inspired by the Honey Cruller (you can even enter for a chance to win one of the limited-edition designs)! We chatted with Jag to discover the creative process behind her design—and her plans to celebrate this special day! —Noa Nichol

Hi Jag! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.

I’m a queer South Asian graphic designer turned illustrator who is passionate about community development and and ending the stigma against LGBTQ+ people within the South Asian community. I’m currently serving as creative director of Vancouver’s Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective.

Congrats on being one of 10 Canadian artists with whom Tim Hortons has teamed up to celebrate National Donut Day! How was this collab a good fit for you?

Thank you! Honestly, when I saw the email arrive in my inbox, as soon as I saw the word “donut” I was sold. I replied back right away saying I was interested. How could I go wrong mixing my love for art and donuts?? Working with such an iconic brand like Tim Hortons was such an honour.

Tell us about your interpretation of an iconic Tims donut? What about the Honey Cruller inspired you?

I drew the Honey Cruller framed by an ornate frame inspired by classic Indian art as sort of this divine entity sitting in the center of the image. When I first read the brief for the commission, the very first donut I pictured myself drawing with the Honey Cruller. The lines and the shapes drew me in.

Are you a donut fan? How do you like to enjoy your donuts?

I love donuts! Especially paired with a steaming hot cup of cha (Indian tea).

If you could design your dream donut (as in, an actual baked good), what would it look/taste like?

Light and fluffy made of chocolate, covered with chocolate.
