In Review: Michael Kors Spring 2022

September 15, 2021

Designer Michael Kors presented his latest collection, Urban Romance, in the heart of New York’s Central Park at Tavern on the Green. A celebration of love was on display for Spring/Summer 2022, showcasing the effortless glamour and style that Kors does best. After very limited in-person events the last 18 month, this show felt extra special.

It was a beautiful, sunny September day. Tavern’s terrace was transformed into a lush oasis complete with greenery, vines and loads of florals. As the show began, Broadway performer Ariana DeBose took to the stage with a jazzy live act, creating a magical experience for the audience.

“I think we’re all ready to focus on the simple, powerful pleasures of love—romantic love, love for one another, love for the places that sustain us, which in my case is New York City,” says Kors. “It’s a special thrill to celebrate the resilience and rebirth of the city and the fashion industry with a live runway show. This collection pays homage to everything I love about spring in the city—the energy, the mix of people, the romance and laid-back glamour.”

Kendall Jenner opened the show in a high-waisted black pencil skirt worn with a bra top and a bright-red lip. She carried a structured bucket bag filled with red ranunculus blooms. The collection featured many classic MK silhouettes like trench coats, sharp tailoring and chic separates. The neutral colour palette of black, white and camel was punctuated with pops of pink and sky blue. We loved all gingham-printed fabric and lace details. There were so many pieces in this collection you would want in your wardrobe forever.

This season, a special cashmere sweater was showcased, designed as an homage to God’s Love We Deliver, an organization near and dear to Kors’ heart. Founded by Ganga Stone and Jane Best in 1985, God’s Love cooks and home delivers free medically tailored meals to people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses throughout the NYC metropolitan area. All proceeds from the sale of this sweater will go to God’s Love.

“For this collection, I was really thinking about what love means to me and I immediately thought of God’s Love We Deliver,” Kors says. “I first started working with them in the late 1980s when AIDS was decimating NYC, and the design community. Since then, I’ve seen how they’ve been there for the city during the toughest moments, showing compassion and delivering food to people in need. That simple act of bringing someone a hot plate of food—that’s love.”

Gigi Hadid closed the event in a show-stopping full-length sequin black grown. This collection was filled with nostalgic nods and refined elegance. Kors recently celebrated his 40th year in business. SS22 is a beautiful example of his design philosophy: that fashion should be evolutionary, not revolutionary. —Lyndi Barrett
