Why Cutie Oils Are Better For Your Nails (Win!)

September 17, 2021

Veteran nail tech Erika Berthelot founded Cutie Oils during the pandemic with the intention of changing the way women viewed dated hand-care products, and to create a cuticle oil that keeps your hands moisturized and manicures fresh, all while providing anti-aging benefits. Cutie Oils customers were not only obsessed with the product, but would frequently apply the oil to pulse points to act as a perfume. After countless requests, Erika decided to create a perfume rollerball, perfect for reapplication on the go, in two core scents, perfect for a quick freshen up. We chatted with Erika about her products, and are giving you a chance to win big! —Noa Nichol

Hi Erika! When and why did you launch Cutie Oils?

I launched Cutie Oils at the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. Esthetics wasn’t deemed an essential business, so I was off work for a few months and I decided to take my time off (as difficult and as stressful as it was) and re-channel my energy into creating something I always wanted to, but could never find the time for. Sometimes, when you’re in the thick of the day-to-day of working and trying to make a living, it can be challenging to pivot and start your own company, but with my new-found free time I knew this was a sign to get started! Since I started in the industry nearly a decade ago, I desperately would try to get my clients to use cuticle oil and to practice hand and nail care, to make their nail beds healthier and stronger. Also, from a nail tech perspective, nail enhancements, such as gel polish, gel nails, acrylics, etc., adhere much better to a healthy nail plate than a dry, brittle or weak one.

What niche were you aiming to fill?

The products available on the market are dated and contain a lot of unwanted ingredients such as CND Solar Oil or OPI Pro Spa Cuticle Oil. My goal was to create something that my clients would enjoy incorporating into their daily self-care rituals as opposed to just feeling obligated to use the product because their nail tech “said so”. The first pain point I addressed was swapping out the messy nail polish brush applicator for a doe-foot applicator, which allows the client to actually massage the product into the skin for better absorption. Next, I made sure the product packaging was aesthetic and something my clients would want to want to feature on their vanity or carry around in their purse for frequent application. Lastly, I added a touch of fragrance to really enhance the overall experience. So, not only do you have an incredible nail product, it also doubles as an amazing fragrance oil when applied to pulse points!

What products do you currently offer, and what makes them unique?

At the moment, we have cutie oils available in two scents, Mia and Olivine, as well as an unscented version. Fragrance isn’t for everyone, but I also personally love to use my unscented Cutie Oil before bed as part of my nighttime routine.

You recently launched limited-edition perfume rollerballs in two beautiful scents; what inspired you to create this range?

Our signature scents, Mia and Olivine, were such a hit! We would get messages from clients like, “I want to bath in olivine,” or, “Please make Mia into a room spray, perfume and candle.” I personally tend to purchase rollerballs more often than full fragrances as I like to switch up my signature scent often, so a rollerball was a natural fit. Hot tip: apply a dab of Mia to one wrist, and a dab of olivine to the other, and sort of pat them together. The scents blend so well into an entirely new fragrance!

As a veteran nail tech, can you please give us your top tips for hand care?

Moisturize and stop picking! Hand washing and sanitizing is wreaking havoc on our hands, so you literally cannot over moisturize. If moisturizer isn’t quite cutting it, try exfoliating first so that your lotion can penetrate through the thick, dry skin on your hands. The other thing that causes significant trauma to your nail bed is picking, whether it’s picking your hangnails, peeling your gel polish off, etc. It’s really very bad for the health of your nails! Try and find something else to soothe that anxious habit.

What’s next up for Cutie Oils?!

We’re working on a few other at home nail products that our clients are either missing or would like to see an updated version of. Stay tuned!
