November 3, 2021

Sephora Canada has unveiled its second Diwali campaign in celebration of the Diwali Festival of Lights in November. Reignite the light this year as you get ready for the Festival of Lights, with the perfect assortment of products to achieve bright and bold Diwali looks. Featured looks include Supercharged Glam, Dramatic Eyes, Power Pout and Cast a Glow, all brought to life with a range of products available at Sephora, and with the help of four new local Canadian collaborators in distinctive Diwali beauty looks. We chatted with them all, including Durka Murugananthan, to find out about their favourite Diwali traditions and describe what the holiday means to them. —Noa Nichol

How did you hook up with Sephora Canada for its 2021 Diwali/Festival of Lights campaign? What about the partnership made it a perfect/poignant fit?

Sephora Canada reached out to me via email for this Diwali campaign. It was a perfect fit because I am a South Asian Thamil who is proud to celebrate her culture openly and Sephora gave me the liberty to express myself in my own creative and colourful way. Being able to represent my people, culture and my background to a wide audience via Sephora Canada is something that is amazing but also especially important because growing up, I never saw people of my skin colour being represented and celebrated.

For those who don’t know, what is Diwali a celebration of? What does it mean to you, personally? Any special/fun traditions that happen annually at your home?

My parents have taught me that Diwali is a time to celebrate the light in your life and to usher in that light into a new year; it’s a time to let go of the dark and the negativity and embrace the light which is why Diwali is so bright and colourful. Diwali to me is a beautiful religious holiday where we come together as a family and just enjoy being in the presence of each other with positivity and light. The best tradition is my mom’s home-made sweets because they are just delectable and absolutely amazing!

The past year, in particular, has had a focus on diversity and acceptance. As we near the end of 2021, how do you use your platform to impact those who follow you when it comes to these topics?

From the beginning of my social media journey I have used my social media platform by always preaching about loving my skin and embracing my insecurities and I continue to do so. I continue to be vocal on my Instagram stories about all of my flaws and how I handle them. I remind my followers that I am also human, that I have feelings too and that no matter what, we should all feel accepted, loved and appreciated…regardless of our skin, flaws or insecurities. I flaunt my hairy arms and my dark armpits in hopes that it makes the younger generation more comfortable in their skin because I always grew up thinking these things weren’t beautiful and not the norm. I hope that by being courageous in this aspect, I change at least one person’s life for the better.

Back to Diwali, what do you do to get glammed up for the holiday? What are some of your favourite Sephora-sourced products to use this time of year?

To get glammed up for the holiday I make sure that there are bright and lovely colours in everything I wear from makeup to attire. I love a good glittery and colourful Diwali glam! Some of my favourite Sephora products are the Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Liner, Velour Lashes Fluff’n Glam – Glamour Volume Mink Lashes in Can’t Be Tamed, Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Divine Neutrals Eyeshadow Palette and a good FENTY BEAUTY gloss!
