Runway Review: Gucci Spring 2022

November 5, 2021

Hollywood Boulevard was shut down this week for the dazzling Gucci Spring 2022 presentation. Creative director Alessandro Michele staged the opulent runway show as an homage to Old Hollywood and the glamourous stars of the silver screen.

Spotlights lit up the sky before more than 100 looks strutted down the iconic walk of fame. Familiar faces walking in the Gucci Love Parade included St. Vincent, Phoebe Bridgers, Macaulay Culkin and Jared Leto (who is set to start in the upcoming film House of Gucci).

It was an opulent presentation featuring rich colours, bold furs, sequin dresses, feathered gowns and crystal-encrusted sunglasses. Nods to the silver screen were featured throughout the collection, from cowboy hats reminiscent of a John Wayne film to dainty tiaras that were very Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Growing up on the outskirts of Rome, Michele would idealize these ideas of Hollywood through the stories his mother would tell him: “Mum worked in the film industry as an assistant in a production company. I remember all the stories she told me, and the details and the sparkles, about that dream factory. There was the alabaster paleness of Marilyn Monroe and her diaphanous voice. There were the black satin gloves of Rita Hayworth and Veronica Lake’s velvet hair, as well as the bewitching allure of Rock Hudson and Kim Novak’s dizzying transformative power. Everything felt like a fairy tale.”

Plus, the star-stacked audience’s wardrobe was a Gucci show within itself! The Italian brand was showcased by guests sitting in director’s chairs front row, including Miley Cyrus, Lizzo, Tracee Ellis Ross, Billie Eilish and Diane Keaton. We particularly loved Gwyneth Paltrow’s red velvet tux, reminiscent of the Tom Ford for Gucci version she wore circa 1996.

“Mum always told me about it: Los Angeles shines in its own magic, which is timeless,” says Michele. “It’s a place that brushes the divinities, becoming a mythology of the possible.” —Lyndi Barrett
