Winter Arts Festival Will Be A Bright Spot In The Season

January 19, 2022

Downtown Vancouver will soon be transformed into a free open-air art gallery. Last year, during the pandemic, the Vancouver Mural Festival (VMF) Winter Arts was created, and 2022 promises a safe, all-ages, inclusive celebration once again.

Local businesses and artists are supported with 17 days of free public art and entertainment in a route that includes Canada Place to Bentall Centre and Park Place, to the Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver Public Library Square, Yaletown plus BC Place and Science World. The Winter Arts Hub is new and the focal point of the festival, located at šxwƛ̓ ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square on the north side of the VAG. A covered, heated outdoor space that is still airy and open allows for safe enjoyment of food, drinks, art and free live performances by international artists like Norway’s Jellyburger and Egyptian Doaa Magdy.

AR and light installations will dazzle in eight locations, including Blanketing the City—a public art and reconciliation process. There will also be walking tours, a talk series, a VR sneak peak of Cirque de Soleil’s Allegria, a featured mural by Pixel Moments and closing night is presented by Vancouver Pride Society. Sounds like an artful time! —Catherine Dunwoody
