January 31, 2022

Vegan-leather accessories maker Lambert has revealed a stunning new product to kick off 2022 in style, the Luna scarf ($50), created in collaboration with self-taught illustrator Laura Kwok. Laura is a Chinese-born artist who grew up on the West Coast of Canada. However, her unique style is deeply rooted in and inspired by both Eastern and Western cultures and traditions. Discover the meaning behind the brightly coloured flowers on this scarf via our Q&A with Laura, below, and enter to win! —Noa Nichol

Hi Laura! How did you first link up with Lambert? What made the partnership a good fit?

I first touched base with Lambert when one of their marketing managers contacted me for a potential collaboration. I am based in Vancouver while Lambert is in Montreal, so we set up an online meeting. From that initial conversation, it was clear that Lambert had a passion for supporting artists and uplifting women in the creative domain. Naturally, I was drawn to the team’s positive energy and collaborative mindset!

Congrats on the launch of the stunning Luna scarf! Tell us about this gorgeous piece, please, and the inspiration behind your design.

Growing up on the West Coast of Canada as a young Chinese Canadian, my childhood was filled with influences from both Eastern and Western cultures. My family would celebrate the New Year twice—once on January 1 as Canadians, and again during the Lunar New Year as an Asian family celebrating traditions from Hong Kong. We would receive red pocket envelopes filled with gold chocolate coins, and eat moon cakes, pomelo, persimmons and other delectable goodies. Although there were many great memories, my mixed cultural heritage was confusing as a child and left me feeling neither here nor there. Art became a therapeutic outlet and I would often paint flowers evoking feelings of freedom and a sense of letting go, allowing the petals to find their own direction and navigate their flow. The Luna scarf was lovingly designed with a beautiful blend of flowers that are traditionally symbolic during Lunar New Year, yet digitally illustrated in a bold and modern style. It is a coming together of cultures to create something unique and meaningful, and a dream collaboration between the East and West Coasts of Canada!

Can you tell us the meaning behind some of the flowers in the design?

Here is a concise floral guide depicting all the New Year flowers in the Luna Scarf along with their traditional symbolic meanings:

Chrysanthemums- for longevity

  • Tiger Lily – confidence and joy
  • Peach Blossom – romance and growth
  • Daffodils – a sacred flower in Chinese culture representing prosperity and wealth
  • Gladiolus – a rise in self-development and strength of character
  • Cherry Blossom – the promise of spring and a renewal of life

My hope was to infuse these feelings into the florals in a subtle way, as a nod to past traditions, tying these ancient cultural meanings to our modern age.

Happy Lunar New Year! How are you planning to celebrate the new Year of the Tiger?

Thank you! I was actually born in the Year of the Tiger, so I’ve always been naturally drawn to the bold and fiery wildcat. My family is having a little dinner gathering and it will probably be a mishmash of East & West (ie. steak and vegetables for dinner, and celebratory mooncakes for dessert!). Ultimately, food and family are at the core of our Lunar New Year celebrations and it is a time to spend with loved ones and be grateful for another year/moon cycle together!
