The Most Stylish Pup In The Park (Win!)

February 9, 2022

This one’s for the dogs. No, really. Wanderruff is a new line of canine essentials inspired by adventure. The collars, leashes, harnesses and walk kits are not just handsome, they merge comfort and consciousness so your pup can feel good, while they look good. Plus, the brand is aiming to one day produce its products from 100 per cent sustainable materials. We chatted with founders Anisa and Paul to find out more. —Vita Daily

Hi Anisa and Paul! Tell us a bit about yourselves to start.

Hello! We are co-founders of Wanderruff. We are partners in business and in life! Paul grew up in B.C. before moving to Northern Ireland as a teenager and Anisa (me!) is originally from England, U.K. We both have backgrounds in the music industry and we are both serial entrepreneurs with businesses like club nights, artist management and bakeries in our history. We moved to Vancouver in 2015 and launched our other business Loki Creative—a branding studio based in Gastown—before dreaming up Wanderruff in the early pandemic days and launching it last September.

When and why did you launch Wanderruff? What niche were/are you aiming to fill?

We were one of those couples who got a COVID puppy—a golden retriever named Norman! We are big dog lovers and grew up with family dogs, but now as new customers in the pet space, we couldn’t find quality, design-forward accessories that aligned with our interest in sustainability. After noticing the gap in the market, we decided to do something about it and start Wanderruff. We craft collars, leashes and harnesses out of recycled plastic and in turn, help to divert waste from landfills. We’re also a member of 1% for the Planet, donating a share of revenue to eco-causes. The key to living a more sustainable life is making better choices and we wanted to create a line of dog accessories that offers people the opportunity to make better choices, easier.

What products do you offer, what kind of pups are they for and what makes them unique?

Wanderruff’s mission is, “Good dogs, doing good”. We want to help dog owners make better, more sustainable choices when buying for their pets. Creating minimalist and aesthetically pleasing accessories that merge comfort and consciousness with style, our initial range of dog essentials includes collars, leashes, and harnesses in five colourways of matching sets (each named after our friend’s dogs!), so your pup can look good from top to tail. Each item ranges in size from small to large catering to dogs big and small. Wanderruff’s webbing material is made out of recycled plastic that is extra durable but still soft and comfortable to wear.

If you haven’t already, tell us more about the eco-conscious piece of the puzzle.

Our goal with Wanderruff is to always keep sustainability in mind. So, we set out to create the best quality dog essentials that use recycled consumer plastics and sustainable materials wherever we can. We certainly aren’t perfect yet, but we’re working hard every day on how we can improve what we do, so it’s better for our planet. We were delighted to partner with Pacific Parkland Foundation in our first year as part of our 1% for the Planet membership. We selected them because they help to protect and preserve Metro Vancouver Parks where we like to walk our dog Norman. We’ve also made the conscious decision to only use recycled, reusable, or compostable materials in all packaging and shipping!

We need to know more about Wanderruff’s Chief Canine Officer, Norman; what does he think of the range, and what are some of his favourite local parks/adventures?

Norman has played a massive part in developing Wanderruff with us, from product-tester, morale-booster, to a very reluctant model in our first shoot (he doesn’t love sitting still for too long). He just thinks it’s common sense that his accessories are a bit better for the planet he lives in. We live in the West End just a couple of blocks away from Stanley Park, so we are lucky to go for walks there every day—his nose and love for retrieving things makes him a really good litter-picking partner! But his favourite places to adventure on the weekends have to be Pacific Spirit Park and Lynn Headwaters Park.
