Whether you want to launch your own fashion line, are looking for beginner sewing classes or anything in-between, The Cut Design Academy in Vancouver is your best bet. We chatted with one student, Randa Salloum, to find out about her experience in The Cut’s Beginning Sewing class. —Vita Daily
Hello Randa! Tell us a bit about yourself to start.
I’m the owner of Collective Will, a secondhand and vintage studio with styles for everyone. I’m a self-proclaimed sustainability enthusiast, who shares day-to-day tips and information that empowers others to make more conscious decisions.
What class are you currently taking at The Cut, and what spurred you to sign up?
I’m taking Beginning Sewing. It’s important for us to understand how our clothing is made, to put the power in our hands to take care of our garments. If we know how to mend an item, we can extend the life of our clothing, instead of donating or throwing it away.
What’s the class like, format wise? What are you learning, and how is it being taught?
We are learning the basics of sewing with a machine in an interactive format. Our instructor will showcase how we create particular stitches, seams, etc. and then allow us the time to recreate it with their help. We are learning how to make a tote bag, a zip closure pillowcase and a sweatshirt.
What do you love best about the class, and what do you hope to get out of it?
I want to have a better relationship with my clothing and make edits to garments on the fly. I find many great items on my buying trips that are beautiful, but damaged. With the know-how to fix them, I could bring these styles back to life for someone else to love.
Will you pursue other learning opps at The Cut once this class wraps? If so, what class or classes do you have your eye on?
Yes! I’m currently eyeing the intermediate sewing class. I hear there is also a class for thrift flipping!
Would you recommend The Cut to other curious learners? Why?
Absolutely! With smaller classes, you’ll have the opportunity for one-on-one learning and will leave with the basics you need to build upon.
