New York Fashion Week just wrapped up and there were a wide range of cool, unique makeup looks that (next to the incredible clothing, of course) really took centre stage. From retro returns to colour and shine to eye-catching contrasting hues, there were some pleasant surprises on the runways recently and it wasn’t just the fashion. Here are five makeup trends from NYFW that will up your style factor this season tenfold. —Jennifer Cox
neon makeup. All those fluorescent colours of the 80s and 90s are back and edgier than ever. Whether you wear a cool electric hue across your lids or add some neon liner to the bottoms of your eyes, be sure to have some new flashy hues in your makeup bag. To get this look: Pick up Violet Voss’ Fruit Sorbet Mini Palette ($18), a 10-pan, fun-size eyeshadow palette with a variety of richly-pigmented mattes, creamy foils, magical metallics, and satin sheens.
glossy lips. We’re not just talking about a little sheen here; Fashion Week brought back super high-glossed lips that practically look translucent. Get your hands on an uber-shiny lip gloss that can be used on its own or over a more solid colour. Look for one that isn’t too sticky or tacky either. To get this look: Nars’ Afterglow Lip Shine Gloss ($37) is a comfortable lip gloss formula that effortlessly glides on for mirror-like shine. It also hydrates lips for up to eight hours.
prominent blush. Gone are the days of soft, more subtle complexions; Fashion Week showed us a new bold way to wear blush on our cheeks and it’s all about not holding back. Makeup “blending” has morphed into daring streaks of pinks and reds across cheeks for a decidedly impactful look. This season, add a solid blush colour to your collection. To get this look: Use one of the punchier shades from Hourglass’ Ambient Lighting Blush ($57), such as Sublime Flush.
contrasting lips. Pucker up for some lips with panache. Two-toned lips were all the rage on the runways in recent weeks. Fashionistas donned lip liners in one colour and lipsticks in a shade lighter or darker to create luscious lips that were doubly on-trend. Add some high-gloss shine like mentioned above and you’ll have two NYFW trends in one! To get this look: The Sustain Lip Kit in Coral from Cheekbone ($59) lets you build layers of colour and shine to your lips. It includes a highly pigmented matte lip pencil in Clay, a rich and creamy satin lipstick in Aina, and even a lip gloss enriched with sunflower seed oil to hydrate your lips.
blue nails. Blue trends come and go, and the multifaceted colour is back. It was one of the most popular nail polish looks at Fashion Week and we can see why: you can do so much with it! Go dark and moody all the way to light and breezy, or use any colour in-between … it’s just gotta have a blue hue! To get this look: Get your hands on Static Nails’ Liquid Glass Lacquer Indigo ($16), which is loaded with rich pigments and natural antioxidants for a healthy manicure that lasts up to 10 days without chipping.
