When Edmonton-based Gillian Thomson couldn’t find a shower cap that functioned properly, she knew she wasn’t alone—so she decided to create her own. Throughout the pandemic Gillian combined her background in marketing, hairstyling and chemistry to develop the Skipper shower cap, meticulously improving upon the now patent-pending design, until it was ready for market. After nearly two years of development, Skipper is now ready to revolutionize morning routines across the globe! We chatted with Gillian to learn more. —Noa Nichol
Hi Gillian! When and why did you launch Skipper? What niche were/are you aiming to fill?
Back in 2020 I was fed up with elastic shower caps that didn’t actually work, but couldn’t find anything different on the market. I knew I wasn’t alone, so I set out to find a better way. After 18 months in development, Skipper launched at the end of 2021 with an adjustable, elastic-free band made with high quality materials. I wanted to create a shower cap that wasn’t bothersome, so people can skip wash day with confidence.
What makes your product unique?
Skipper shower caps are available in one size that fits most. It’s a totally new kind of shower cap—it doesn’t use an elastic around the band, it’s reusable, machine washable, looks better and made with high-quality materials that each serve a special purpose.
In what ways will this shower cap a) revolutionize our morning routine, b) help our hair and c) save the planet?!
Skipper will help you skip wash day with confidence. For those that already use shower caps, Skipper won’t bother you! It’s easy to put on, actually comfortable and stays in place. For those that are new to shower caps, Skipper is a comfortable tool that keeps your hair dry while you shower, saving your hairstyle, water, time and the cost of products and utilities. Shampooing and heat styling your hair can dry it out. By skipping wash day, you can let the natural oils of your scalp moisturize your hair and spare it from heat styling. Using a shower cap extends blowouts, preserves hair colour and saves a tonne of styling time. Finally, by skipping wash day, you’re cutting down the water needed to shampoo and condition your hair. Reducing your shower by five minutes saves 40-50L of water. If you do this every second day (or more), that adds up to a lot of water saved. Plus, Skipper is reusable and made to last, so it’s sparing countless plastic shower caps from landfills.
What’s next in store for your brand?
Skipper is brand new, so we’re spreading the word far and wide to help as many people as possible enjoy skipping wash day. We look forward to offering more colours and partnering with like-minded brands in the future.
