Rita Remark Talks Spring 2022 Nail Trends

March 30, 2022

Spring has sprung! And who better to fill us in on the season’s top trends for nails than essie’s lead nail artist Rita Remark? Let’s skip the small talk and get right to it! —Noa Nichol

Hi Rita! Spring is (finally!) in the air! It feels like people are ready to shed both the winter and the pandemic blues this year. That said, what’s on your radar in terms of top spring nail trends?

Spring nail trends include Y2K decals: think mismatched clouds, flowers, smiley faces, ying yangs and more. Also, checkerboard tips or full nail designs are leading the nail trend, as is texture. Matte nails will edge their way back into the mainstream, but we can also look forward to transformative topcoats that add pearl effects, glitter or iridescent washes atop of polish. Think of it like adding a glam filter to your favourite nail colour! (try matte about you topcoat). Finally, the classic French tip. No, not a twist on the classic, THE classic bright pink and white manicure is back—and not ironically. Adele and Beyonce are big fans. Those who want to wear it softly, can try its American counterpart with a softer eggshell shade on the tips. Try blanc or limo-scene (for an American french mani).

Can you give us tips or steps on achieving one of your fave spring nail looks?

To create a mismatched Y2K nail art look, look no further than a double-sided dotting tool. A cluster of dots using essie “blanc” can be clouds, five dots in a circle are a daisy and two strategically placed dots, atop of a swirl, can be a ying yang.

The winter gloves are off! Can you talk us through your top nail and hand-care advice?

Cold weather can leave hands and nails dry, cracked and brittle. It’s important to give them a fresh start. When hands become too calloused or rough, moisturizer isn’t able to absorb. Begin by exfoliating hands once or twice a week with a hand scrub. Next rub cuticle oil, like apricot cuticle oil into the nails and cuticles. Follow with moisturizer. Then remember to apply cuticle oil and moisturizer whenever needed. Don’t forget, our hands are one of the first places to show age, so always use sunscreen on your hands! Re-apply throughout the day.

Looking to summer, what are some upcoming nail trends we haven’t seen before or can look forward to.

This summer is going to be about statement nails. Bold neons, Long lengths, appliques, chains and more. No need to match or coordinate your nails or your mani to your outfit. It’s about fun and expression.
