The way that I am literally about to get my period as I write this. We know the feeling all too well, don’t we? That point in your cycle where you are exhausted, bloated, constipated, emotionally drained and sensitive to any and every comment. And just when you start to believe that the world is out to get you, your emotions level out and your mood and body suddenly bounce back. And you realize, “Oh yes, I just got my period.”
But why don’t many of us ever discuss this beyond the closed doors of our personal social circles? Periods are genuinely one of the only universal experiences that tie our community together. At Pinterest, we know our Pinners are ready to start talking about periods and menstrual cycles and we are here for it in a big way.
At Pinterest, we are dedicated to being a safe and inclusive resource for period-proud education and dialogue. In our research we found that nearly a quarter of people who menstruate (23%) admit they don’t understand their menstruation and the overwhelming majority of us (68%) are eager to learn more. So while we are on a mission to help people create a life they love, that means providing content and information that is sometimes overlooked, like menstrual health.
No body is the same, and no cycle is either, which is why we want to get you familiar with your period and spend some time understanding menstruation. On Pinterest, we’ve seen searches for understanding your menstrual cycle chart go up +95%. Personally, I can’t lie, a few months ago you couldn’t have asked me to explain the follicular and luteal phases of my period. And I’m clearly not alone as those searches have increased on Pinterest, 3x and +96% respectively.
And Pinterest creators are joining the conversation too. Because Pinterest is a safe and trusted space to create content, we’re seeing creators open up and share their period experiences and offer tips for managing pain. Check out Letitia’s Kiu’s Idea Pin on how she practices self-care during her period:
It blows my mind that I am an adult woman and I could not confidently speak to the four phases of my period! But I refuse to be embarrassed here. I want to openly talk about it because I believe I’m not alone and I know many of us want to learn.
So let’s talk about it! Let’s be period-proud, familiarize ourselves with the follicular phase and every phase that makes up our cycle. Because despite differences in our bodies, our period timing and our cycles, we go through it one way or another. So let’s be mindful about menstruation and let’s do it together.
