Terry Fox Tee

April 11, 2022

It’s been 42 years since the Marathon of Hope, and the Terry Fox Foundation is gearing up for the annual Terry Fox Run with the launch of a limited-edition T-shirt designed byCanadian artist Douglas Coupland.

Launching April 12, the shirt features a dot-screened portrait of Terry and the words I’m Not a Quitter printed on the sleeve or back. Back in 1980 Terry famously said, “Nobody is ever going to call me a quitter,” after running over 5,000 kilometres across much of Canada.

A few Canadian celebrities in music, film, television, fashion and sports are in support, including Alessia Cara, Catherine O’Hara, Darryl Sittler, Margaret Atwood, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Michael Bublé, Michael “Pinball” Clemons, Rachel McAdams, Rick Mercer, Sarah McLachlan, Sidney Crosby, Tessa Virtue and Tom Cochrane. “Each of them embodies the spirit of Terry’s no-quit attitude, which is the inspiration behind this year’s Terry Fox Run launch campaign,” says brother Fred Fox from the Terry Fox Foundation.

Douglas Coupland, Canadian artist and first-time designer of the 2022 Terry Fox Run T-shirt has worked with the Fox family before. Just before the 25-year anniversary, Coupland created a book where he went through the archives and assembled a story told through objects owned by the Fox family and the estate. “It’s a wonderful book, extremely emotional, and its main function was to go into school libraries across Canada and get younger people gripped by Terry’s story,” Couplans says. “Then in 2012 I did the Terry Fox Memorial in Vancouver. It’s a series of four huge bronzes which form a stop-frame of Terry’s distinctive hop/walk, which everyone grew to know during the Marathon of Hope.”

Starting tomorrow, Terry Fox fans and supporters can purchase the limited-edition Tee at terryfox.org and register to join the annual Terry Fox Run, which takes place on Sunday, September 18. The shirts, produced by Adidas, are available in a variety of sizes and styles. All proceeds support cancer research in Canada, with Terry’s mission of funding critical cancer research across the country. —Catherine Dunwoody
