cooking apron. You can find blank cotton aprons at craft stores, dollar stores, and online. Using fabric paint, have your child put their handprints on the apron or paint their own masterpiece. They can write a message to dad too. Make sure to include the date (maybe on the tag). Add-ins: barbecue sauces and tools.

cutting board engraving. Buy a standard wood cutting board and let your child draw or write something across the board. Then, use a soldering iron to burn or etch the artwork right into the wood. Add-ins: fancy cheeses and other charcuterie meats dad loves.

the classic mug reinvented. Did you know that you can write on glazed ceramics with permanent markers? Just bake it in an oven afterwards at 300 degrees for 20-30 minutes to really make it permanent—it will be dishwasher and microwave safe after heating. Add-ins: include some fancy coffees or teas.

tackle box. Don’t worry: no lure-or worm-buying required! This is a snack tackle box – pick up an empty tackle box at a local hardware store and have fun filling the compartments with dad’s favourite candies and snacks. Add-ins: a new cooler with some beverages, or, if he likes fishing, buy him a new rod.

decked out hammer. Purchase a plain hammer with a wooden handle. You can have your child colour it with markers or paint it. You can also have them add stickers or colourful tape. Add-ins: additional tools to complete a set, or a new toolbox.
