Top Summer Jewelry Trends & Styling Tips (Win!)

June 20, 2022

Summer’s nearly here, and we’re looking for expert advice on how to wear our favourite jewelry (or tips on what pieces to invest in now). Olaeda is a Toronto-based jewelry brand that produces ethically curated, quality gold-filled pieces for the ultimate attainable luxury. We chatted with founder Talia Massaroni to find out more. —Noa Nichol

Hi Talia! Please tell us a bit about yourself and Olaeda!

At a young age, I always had a profound love for art and immersed myself in painting and crafts. After visiting a local bead store in Toronto, I was instantly drawn to this artistry and my passion was ignited. I quickly began experimenting and making jewelry for my family and friends (which they absolutely loved!) and this ultimately gave me the confidence to start Olaeda. In May 2022, I opened my first Toronto showroom, which now retails a selection of  everyday demi-fine jewelry, with a focus on authentic 14K gold-filled, sterling-silver and semi-precious pieces.

Let’s get into the ‘bling” of it! What is demi-jewelry, and why the sudden surge in popularity?

If you’re looking to elevate your style without spending too much, then demi-fine jewelry is the perfect option for you. Demi-fine jewelry is classified as jewelry that is one tier below fine jewelry (solid gold), and more desirable than costume jewelry (plated). It is often made with more precious metals using advanced techniques that yield a quality product. Demi-fine jewelry is a great alternative for those who appreciate the look of fine but want a more affordable alternative; without sacrificing quality. It’s definitely garnering more attention these days, as the price of gold continues to increase.

What is the difference between gold filled and gold plated? Which should we buy/wear?

This is a great question, and one which often causes confusion for many! There are many types of gold jewelry, so it’s really important to know the difference, so you know what you’re spending your money on! Gold filled is made with 14k solid gold and is a layered product. Two sheets of solid gold are sandwiched between brass using heat and pressure. This mechanical process provides incredible durability and longevity and yields a product that looks and feels like solid gold. In addition, gold filled is a fraction of the price of solid gold, which allows the consumer to afford a chic layering stack. With proper care, your gold filled pieces can last you a lifetime! On the other hand, gold plated is made almost entirely of base metal which is dipped (plated) in gold.  It is extremely easy and inexpensive to make, and often people refer to this as “fast fashion” jewelry. Base metals are used because they are inexpensive; popular ones that are regularly used include copper, zinc, aluminum, lead and nickel. It’s not often known which elements are incorporated in base metal, which is why many experience reactions to these products (think of green skin). In addition, the lifespan of these pieces are very short livedrepeated wear and tear will cause the gold plating to deteriorate, leaving you with the silver base metal exposed. So, when it comes down to what you should buy; gold filled is going to give you a better return on your investment.

Trend wise, what’s on your radar for summer? Styles? Gold or silver?

Gold continues to be one of the hottest jewelry trends! Everyday gold jewelry (whether dainty or bold pieces) is a super easy way to instantly elevate your look. Although silver is making a comeback, and we’re seeing mixed metal pieces, gold is still the top contender. Other pieces that are on my radar this summer include pearls, bright colours and medallions. Pearls are always a classic and timeless addition, but we’re now seeing them incorporated into hoops, chains and even rings. One of our best-sellers is actually our pearl stud ring. Coloured gemstones are starting to make headway, and are fun pieces to incorporate into our summer look. Small injections of semi precious strands, combined with gold layers and pearls add dimension, yet still provide value when worn separately. Medallions have always been a top trend. They are easy to wear and can provide a polished look with minimal effort. Bianca Andreescu rocked our monogram medallion necklace when she won the U.S. open in 2019. Everyone is loving them! Be sure to keep an eye out for some new monogram medallion styles dropping soon,

Anklets are back! Top tips on wearing/stacking, and favourite styles?

Yes, anklets are back with an elevated twist! At Olaeda, we’re introducing anklets in delicate styles and designs. Whether you prefer simple and dainty, or bold and fabolous, we have something for everyone. Single-strand anklets are an easy go-to-option to wear everyday, but if you want to amp it up, I recommend adding layers and stacking various styles. The best piece of advice is to have fun with layers and stacking. For instance, try layering different coloured metals (gold and silver) and textures for that effortlessly chic, cool girl look. I personally love our paperclip and venice anklet available in 14K gold-filled, as well as our curb chain and poppy available in sterling silver.
