Meet The Talented Winners Of The Jack And Doris Shadbolt Foundation 2022 VIVA Awards

June 22, 2022

Drumroll please! We’ve got the names of all of the winners of this year’s Jack And Doris Shadbolt Foundation VIVA Awards and Max Wyman Award, and we can’t wait to intro them all to you!

Established in 1988, the VIVA Awards were created to nurture the advancement of the visual arts in B.C. and their appreciation by the public. They celebrate exemplary achievement by B.C. artists in mid-career, chosen for outstanding accomplishment and commitment by an independent jury. This year, artists Charles Campbell—a Jamaican-born and internationally acclaimed multidisciplinary artist, writer, curator and educator whose work explores aspects of Black history, especially as experienced in the Caribbean region and within the infamous nexus of slavery and colonialism—and Jan Wade—a Hamilton-born, Vancouver-based artist whose practice includes mixed-media assemblages, paintings, textiles, text works and icon-like sculptural objects, many of them are created out of or embellished with found and recycled materials—are the recipients of the 2021 VIVA Award, granted annually by the Jack and Doris Shadbolt Foundation for the Visual Arts.

The Foundation also awarded the Max Wyman Award in Critical Writing to Scott Watson, an internationally renowned UBC contemporary art curator, educator and writer whose career has spanned more than 35 years. Watson’s 1990 book on Jack Shadbolt earned the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize in 1991 and, as director of the Belkin, he encouraged many national and international collaborations, including Ruins in Process: Vancouver Art in the Sixties (2009), a collaboration with grunt gallery on an online digital archive of Vancouver art in the 1960s and early 1970s.
