Canadian fashion brand, Yoga Jeans, recently released two new pairs of upcycled denim shorts for its summer collection. Designed in Montreal and ethically made in Canada, we chatted with co-founder Eric Wazana to learn more about this stylishly sustainable process. —Noa Nichol
Today we’re talking about Yoga Jeans’ shorts for summer; which styles are part of the brand’s up-cycled denim program?
We have two new denim bike shorts that just came in ! Cape porpoise is presented in a light-blue denim featuring a two-tone design which gives a trendy look to a casual style. It offers a relaxed, straight-leg silhouette and a raw hem. Earth comes in a medium indigo wash with authentic whiskers and raw hems that can be rolled to the length of your choice. It’s a comfortable and versatile closet staple you’ll be craving to wear on repeat this season.
How does the up-cycled denim program work, and why did Yoga Jeans implement it?
The fashion industry produces about 92 million tonnes of waste per year. This includes unsold merchandise, production off-cuts, and leftover materials resulting from overproduction, also known as deadstock. We believe in extending the useful life of materials and resources to mitigate the amount of waste created in our industry. The Yoga Jeans upcycled denim capsules are one of the creative solutions we have in place to reduce waste. All items are made using excess fabric, overstock, deadstock, test blankets and pre-/post-consumer waste.
What other sustainable materials/technologies does Yoga Jeans use in its processes?
We have a selection of denims that are certified BCI (Better Cotton Initiative), Cotton Leads, organic, recycled, Repreve and/or Eco T-400. We are also proud to use laser technology, a sustainable method that helps reduce the number of chemicals, natural resources, and energy used in our washing processes. The laser works by removing the colour from the fabric surface, giving it a used and faded look.Using laser technology to distress our jeans also means we reduce water consumption, use fewer chemicals, and use less energy. We believe the investment in green technologies will help to create a new eco-friendly standard in the fashion industry in denim practices.

Denim bike shorts are a must in your wardrobe; they’re so versatile and comfortable! You can dress them with an oversize graphic tee and sneakers, with a blazer and crop top or a colorful top and slide sandals … the options are endless.
