It’s The Perfect Summer To Start Paddleboarding (Win!)

You’ve more than likely seen them out on the water; from the ocean to the lake, paddleboarding seems to be the biggest thing in outdoor aquatic summer fun. And Montreal-based Maddle is shaking up the space, making easy-to-use (and store!) inflatable boards so you can explore Canada’s waterways in style. We chatted with co-founder Julien Méthot to find out more! —Vita Daily

How is Maddle a disruptor in the paddle-boarding space?

We realized that everyone in the paddleboarding industry was focusing on board features and accessories, without bringing an interesting lifestyle angle that would work well with the growing mainstream paddle board segment (it is the world’s fastest growing sport after all)! If you look at the paddle board’s older ‘board siblings’ like surf, skateboard, and snowboard, you can see that they were heavily intertwined with art and culture and created some of the biggest cultural trends we have seen in the recent years. Nowadays, we can still see remnants of the influence that was brought by these sports in today’s fashion. However, the paddle board industry never got the cool makeover, until today. That is what inspired the Maddle concept: by merging art, never seen before colours and a cutting-edge aesthetic, with an amazing paddle board at a great price. The goal: democratizing paddle boarding by making it cool and trendy.

What inspired this season’s collection of colourways and designs?

We created a mix of colours with our own product design formulas to create four different universes that would work well for different customer personas:

• The Dreamer, with its pastel colours, was designed for the people that are looking for calm and serenity out on the lake.
• The Free Spirit, with its burnt vintage colour and its classic surf design elements, was designed to appeal to a nostalgic and vintage loving crowd
• The Voyager, with its classic nautical colours and its leaf pattern, was designed to appeal those that love camping and outdoors
• The Thrillseeker, with its bright Miami inspired colours and its trendy acid graphic,  was designed for a higher energy and younger audience.

Why is Maddle a go-to all-around board for people of all skill levels?

We designed the Maddle’s shape to be an “All Around” board. That means that it performs well in most bodies of water, and for most activities. That’s achieved by having a regular width board, and a shape that is not too rounded, nor too pointy. With its 10’6 length and 32 inches width, it is the size that works best for most people in terms of stability and maneuverability. The high-end double layer MSL fusion technology we used for the board ensures it remains stiff and gives the user a balanced ride.

Where can you explore paddleboarding?

We are lucky to be living in Canada, the world’s country with the most lakes and rivers! I would recommend starting off with a nearby lake that doesn’t get too much traffic from boats to ensure you aren’t battling annoying waves. As your experience level goes up, you can explore calm rivers, and even the ocean for the more advanced paddle boarders. Each province has some beautiful gems to explore.

Encouraging words for Canadians hoping to begin their paddleboarding adventure this summer?

Try to invest in a double layer board like ours to ensure you have a great feeling on the water. Watch some video tutorials on technique and form like our How To Maddle Video to ensure that you are paddling correctly. Check the weather before heading out and avoid high winds. Favour calm waters like lakes to start off. Wear some sunscreen to avoid sunburns and most importantly, always wear a life jacket on your board. Oh, and have some fun while exploring our country’s beautiful waterways!
