We know the importance of exercising our body, so why don’t we give the same type of toning attention to our face? That’s where our latest skin-loving, anti-aging discovery comes in—it’s a local (to Vancouver) “facial fitness” treatment we’re loving, and we know you will, too!
Founded in 1992 by Gisele Ramussen, and now with locations on South Granville Street and in North Vancouver, Facial Fitness is the first microcurrent spa in the city and continues to be the leader in offering microcurrent treatments. This science-backed holistic beauty offering, referred to as the “non-invasive facelift,” uses medical-grade equipment to stimulate and tone facial muscles, giving the entire face an intensive workout. Bonus: it’s suitable for everyone, both women and men, of all ages, from 20 to 80 years old and beyond!
We completed six sessions in six weeks, and couldn’t be happier with the results, which can include opening up the eyes, creating fullness in the upper cheek, firming the jawline, stimulating collagen and elastin production, and promoting circulation to achieve glowing skin. No “frozen” look here; our face looks naturally lifted and renewed, glowing and toned—just like our body does when we work our muscles regularly and right!
Never painful, the first treatment was an intro of sorts to the sensation of having those fine facial muscles worked via two hand-held microcurrent wands in tandem with a set of adhesive patches. Subsequent sessions simply felt relaxing, and never, ever painful. And, though there are at-home tools these days claiming to offer similar results, the truth is, the expertly utilized medical-grade equipment at Facial Fitness is unique, like using heavier weights at the gym, under the guidance of a personal trainer. It’s also much more precise and can be tailored to your individual needs for far better results.
“The microcurrent equipment that we use at Facial Fitness is considered medical grade and provides electro-stimulation to the muscles to tone them, using both wands and patches for a strong, longer-lasting treatment,” explains Gisele. “A home device that is battery operated emits a weaker current that stimulates circulation but does not give you the same level or effectiveness of toning that our treatments do.”
One question Gisele and her team are frequently asked around the treatment is, “Can I get the same results from doing facial exercises?” “Facial exercises work in the neck area and can be very effective because we can contract the muscles in that area. However, we can’t contract the muscles in our face, we can only move them in one direction, so toning those muscles ourselves is not possible,” she says. She recommends starting with one treatment a week for the first six weeks. Then every two weeks and then every three weeks depending on the age of the individual. “Most clients are happiest coming every two to three weeks,” she says, adding that she has had clients who started with her 15, 20 and even 30 years ago and are still getting treatments!
In terms of seeing improvements, she says, “This depends on your age and physical fitness level. The younger you are the quicker you will see results. In your 30s you will see results after the first session. As you get older the process takes longer, just like when you go to the gym.” And, like going to the gym, each session builds on the previous one and the muscles continue to get firmer. “After the first session you will notice your skin has a warm glow. That is the result of all the extra blood flowing into the area, created by the stimulation of the wands and the energy flowing through the muscles,” according to Gisele.
Last but not least, Facial Fitness skin studio uses Bioethique skincare products to complement their treatments: organic, vegan and suitable even for sensitive skin. (Insider tip: the Ginseng Glow oil is a cult favourite.) Now, who’s ready to get their face fit?! —Noa Nichol
