With the seasons (quickly) changing and the fall season getting busier and busier, there are sometimes parts of our skin and bodies that we may forget from time to time. With SkinCeuticals‘ wide range of medical-grade skincare, the parts of your body that may not come first to mind can get the treatment they deserve. We chatted with Dr. Alain Michon from the Ottawa Skin Clinic to learn more. —Noa Nichol

Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.

I have been practising cosmetic dermatology for almost fifteen years, focusing primarily on non-invasive facial and body treatment. I am passionate about this medical field and have completed a Master of Science, postgraduate degree in aesthetic medicine from Queen Mary, University of London, U.K. I value a holistic and individualized approach with all our patients for optimal outcomes.

There are sometimes parts of our skin and bodies that we may neglect. What would you say those parts are?

I would say that all body parts are often neglected, as we should be changing our routine in the fall and winter months.

What are the most common skin concerns on our body (e.g., chest, back, hands, legs, elbows, feet, etc.)?

During the colder months, the most common skin concerns are facial dullness and dryness. The latter affects many other body parts. Another concern that we typically see in the fall is face, neck, chest and hand hyperpigmentation that will worsen during summer from exposure to UV radiation.

Regarding those common concerns, what are some products and key ingredients that you would recommend to address those specific skin concerns?

For facial dryness and dullness, it is best to add a moisturizer to your skincare routine and cut back on products containing acids like AHA/BHA. One of our favourites is the Triple Lipid Restore from SkinCeuticals. It includes a blend of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids and will improve the skin barrier function, minimizing trans-epidermal water loss and locking in skin moisture. As for hyperpigmentation, Discoloration Defense from SkinCeuticals will help target dark spots and improve skin tone and quality with their powerful yet gentle blend of tranexamic acid, kojic acid, niacinamide and HEPES.

What are the common treatment options available to complement a skincare regimen?

Medical grade facials, chemical peels and lasers, used alone or in combination, are the most common treatment options to complement a skincare program. Together, they will definitely provide better results.

What are some tips/advice for a complete (head-to-toe) skincare regime/routine?

Prevention is key. UV radiation exposure from the sun is an important extrinsic factor of skin ageing. Always try to protect your face and body from harmful UV rays. This can be done by minimizing exposure during peak UV hours, wearing proper protective clothing and hat, and protecting your skin with a daily application of topical vitamin C serum followed by sunscreen. Keep in mind UVA radiation remains constant throughout the year. As for a particular skin issue during colder months, people are much more susceptible to dry skin. Since people spend more time in heated offices or homes, the dry air affects our skin even more. The same would apply to those with skin conditions like eczema, as the cooler air outside can lead to more severe irritation. However, to help replenish your skin’s moisture levels, use hydrating creams instead of lotions, and minimize the time spent in hot baths and showers.
