New Year, New Income For Side Hustlers & Savings-Savvy Canadians

January 27, 2023

As inflation continues to increase across Canada, more people are looking for ways to make extra money and save on expenses. One solution that has gained popularity in recent years is using online platforms like Poshmark to sell gently used or thrifted clothing and other items. We chatted with Poshmark seller Chelsea Carter, a 21-year-old student at Concordia University who sells to pay for basic necessities, school supplies and to reinvest into her closet, to learn more. —Noa Nichol

Hi Chelsea! Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.

I am a full-time student that sells on Poshmark on the side. I have a passion for art and entrepreneurship. I try to manage my academic and business pursuits and use my free time to source products to sell, market those products, and interact with buyers. I love the feeling of having my own small business and taking charge of everything. Hopefully, my skills will achieve success in both areas.

When and why did you start using Poshmark? What’s your status on the platform now?

I started using Poshmark in the fall of 2019. At the time, when I had first heard of Poshmark it was only available in the U.S., and it was only in the fall of that year that I discovered that they opened it to Canadians as well. I currently use the platform to resell women’s clothing since I have a harder time selling men’s clothing. My status on Poshmark is a Posh Ambassador. I am currently staying strong at a 5-star review, 1-day shipping and 46 love notes.

As inflation continues to increase across Canada, more people are looking for ways to make extra money and save on expenses. How can Poshmark assist in that endeavour (can you speak to it from personal experience)?

Yes, inflation has made it harder to afford everyday items, so it’s great to have platforms like Poshmark making it easier to resell items and save money. Poshmark has been a great asset to the reselling industry, providing a convenient platform for entrepreneurs to easily buy and sell items. It’s also a great way to make some extra money and recycle items that are no longer needed.

According to a recent survey, 74 per cent of Generation Z and millennial Canadians do not believe the country’s economic situation will improve in 2023. How has selling on Poshmark helped you earn some extra cash?

Selling on Poshmark has allowed me to sell several items to help me make some extra money. Inflation can indeed make things more challenging, but Poshmark has done a great job of staying ahead of the curve with its various tools and marketing strategies. They continue to come up with new and creative ways to help their users make the most out of their sales.

What other benefits does Poshmark offer sellers like yourself?

Being a Poshmark seller is a great way to connect with other like-minded individuals who share the same interest. The Poshmark community is extremely welcoming, allowing for joint selling opportunities. Not to mention, becoming a Posh Ambassador opens the door to lots of great events hosted by Poshmark. I’ve had the pleasure of attending a few, and it’s a great way to network and get tips and tricks from other sellers. It’s truly a unique experience.

What are your top tips for making some extra money on Poshmark in 2023?

My tips for making some extra money in 2023 would be shopping at thrift stores or boutiques that are less known can be a great way to save money. Additionally, selling products and brands that are popular in your community can be a great way to make extra money. Personally, I like selling Lululemon, Steve Madden, Forever 21, The North Face, Hunter and Adidas because these brands sell well in my closet, but don’t forget to consider lesser-known brands as well. They may not be as popular, but they could be just as profitable! Finally, re-listing old inventory gives it another chance to be sold.

Have you faced any challenges or obstacles along your Poshmark journey thus far? How did you overcome these?

I have struggled in managing it all. Keeping up with school and Poshmark becomes difficult at times since they both take up a lot of my time, but I have been managing time more efficiently to get both done.

What’s the one item you’ve currently got listed that you think someone needs to snag NOW?!

Currently, I have this tan suede mini dress from the brand Design Lab Lord & Taylor that is SO CUTE. The combination of the tan suede material and the design of the mini dress is really unique. It would be perfect for both spring and summer but with a hint of fall vibes. I think it’s a great way to transition from one season to the next.
