With spring comes warmer weather, renewed energy, and fresh inspiration. This makes it the perfect time to reconnect with your surroundings—welcome the outdoors in, play with natural materials, and experiment with colour palettes using Ashley de Boer’s three easy ways to refresh and re-energize your home for spring!
bring the outdoors in. A fun way to celebrate the season—and one of the easiest ways to bring a pop of colour, and freshness indoors—is to incorporate seasonal greenery and blooms in your home. Make the most out of your own backyard or neighbourhood by foraging for foliage right outside your front door. Stick to one or two varieties for a sophisticated and artful display. A visit to your local florist can also be a great resource for plants, locally-grown flowers and other greenery. Pair your arrangement with a contrasting vase to showcase the colours and textures of the season’s offerings. Whether it’s a fresh bouquet of flowers, a rattan tray, a stone sculpture, a cosy throw, or a jute rug, integrating organic materials and natural elements into your space brings nature into our homes along with a sense of calm and peace.
shelf styling. Shelving is where you can showcase your most treasured pieces. A mix of modern items, cherished heirlooms, and vintage finds will create a look that will withstand the test of time. Engage the eye by layering different items such as paintings, books, serving boards, vases and other meaningful decor. To create interest, juxtapose these items with contrasting materials such as wood, rattan, stone, porcelain, metal, glass, and textiles of varying heights, colours, shapes, and textures. Books are great conversation starters and showcase your hobbies and interests. Try stacking books horizontally or standing books vertically and pair them with sturdy bookends to add function and style to your shelf. As your style evolves or you have new pieces you want to introduce, rearrange your items to give your shelf a fresh look. Tip: clusters of three or five items tend to please the eye.
naturals and neutrals. Decorating with pillows is a simple way to elevate your space and experiment with design. Start with one pillow that speaks to you and use it as a starting point. Incorporate a variety of sizes, shapes, patterns, and colours that complement the original selection to create a cohesive look. Accent pillows are an excellent way to unify all the elements of your space and, since they are smaller-ticket items, you can change them up with the seasons (or whenever your heart desires).Another easy and fun way to bring interest, colour and texture to your space is at the dinner table—your table is a canvas, too! To create a classic yet fresh tablescape, use the season as inspiration for your colour palette. Having a colour theme in mind helps to create a harmonious look when shopping for accessories such as placemats, plates, cutlery, and napkins. The key is to layer contrasting colours and tones, and mix textures and patterns with a neutral backdrop that will showcase the season and elevate your interior.
