Since launching in 1926, a certain little green tube has made a big name for itself—one Weleda Skin Food Original is sold every 11 seconds around the world. The ultra-thick do-it-all cream is beloved for its soothing and comforting abilities. It’s a must-have for dry skin, and a staple in makeup artists’ kits backstage at fashion weeks from New York to Copenhagen. No stranger to its versatility, celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff has been using the OG formula on her A-list clientele (ahem, Margot Robbie and Priyanka Chopra) for years. Recently, the brand expanded the iconic family with a full routine of products. Say hello to Skin Food Face Care. We had the pleasure of chatting with Dubroff over Zoom a few weeks ago to dive deep into the new gentle balm cleanser, lightweight day cream and super-rich night cream. Here, the makeup superstar shares how these oil-infused formulas are making an appearance on the red carpet, and in her daily routine. —Emily MacCulloch & Ingrie Williams, @t.zonebeauty
Why are you a longtime fan of Skin Food Original?
The smell is amazing, and the texture is so beautiful for adding that extra glow to the skin. And [I like] the richness of it. Another big draw for me is the accessibility and affordable cost. The products are available in health food stores, and the price point is doable for me—which was especially important when I was starting out as an artist.
How have you been using the new line on your celeb clients?
I try all makeup and skincare on myself to make sure it performs and feels great and I’ve incorporated all three items into my kit. The day cream is excellent as an all over moisturizer. I use it with beauty tools [such as a face roller or gua sha] because it’s almost serum-like. It’s even perfect for skin with an oilier finish and the energizing citrus feels really nice on the skin. For clients, the nighttime cream is ideal to use around the edges of the face and then Skin Food Original is still what I’ll pop on as that last step for highlighting. The cleanser plays a very prominent role in my kit, replacing the need for makeup wipes. I use it with a washcloth to quickly change things up.
Which of these new formulas are you using the most?
I’ve been using the night cream a lot, slathering it on all day because I had a bout of irritation. But also, I live in California where it’s dry, which leaves me feeling like I need more moisture. But that cleanser is really good. It’s set to replace all others.
Have you discovered any skincare hacks?
I used the cleanser as a mask when my skin was in super SOS mode, and I liked it a lot. These products are very calming and soothing. My skin’s looking great again, so I want to keep this up.
