If you were to ask a fashion stylist what coat is a must-have for spring, they would tell you the trench. Trench coats date back to the early 19th century and we are still wearing them today. It’s a classic for a reason. It is one of the only styles of jacket that you can throw on over your joggers, wear to the office or even don elegantly over a cocktail dress. Purchasing a trench coat is making an investment into a piece that you can own for years or even decades to come. Not convinced yet? I have styled up three looks for three very different occasions and topped each look off with my trench coat that I have owned for eight plus years.
School Drop Off
Mornings can be a hustle, but a trench coat can make you feel put together no matter what. This look is simple and classic with lightweight, dressy joggers, a cozy, grey crewneck, white runners and sunnies. Simply throw on the trench topper and grab your coffee to go. An outfit like this looks chic and effortless.
At the Office
It’s that time of year where you may be opting for some lighter pieces for your work wardrobe. While the temperatures can swing from chilly morning lows, to sun scorching afternoons, a lightweight trench coat can be that perfect piece to throw on in the morning. Don’t be afraid to play with some volume. Even though my trench is soft and flowy, I chose to go with a pair of wide-leg trousers. The more structured top with the collar keeps the outfit looking office appropriate while the billowy layers give the look a modern flair.
Weekend Brunch
A weekend outfit that is cosy, cute, and easy is made even easier with a trench. Wide-leg denim is a sure fire way to update your weekend wear. I’ve paired my secondhand jeans with a vintage floral sweater, vintage Barbie-pink earrings, secondhand shoes and a belt bag that matches my shoes.
My favourite places to find great outerwear are thrift shops. If digging through racks isn’t quite your thing, Poshmark also has a huge assortment of preloved trenches.
