6 Things To Thrift From The Men’s Section

April 21, 2023

When it comes to thrifting, we shouldn’t limit ourselves to only shopping in the ladies sections. The men’s sections are loaded with treasures waiting to be rescued and worn again. With the rise of fast fashion over the past decade, the women’s thrift store racks are filled with cheap, synthetic, poor-quality clothing. Yes, there are still some lovely things to be found in there, but it’s getting harder. Wander over to the men’s section and, while there is still a plethora of beer tees, tacky golf shirts and bad ties, there are also more-natural fabrics, a wider size range and interesting silhouettes to complement your wardrobe. So what should you be looking for? I suggest the following items. —Jen Pistor

Cotton sweaters: Speaking of natural fabrics, a cotton sweater is one of my musts for transitioning my wardrobe. The temperature is still swinging low with some periodic warm days. This beautiful vintage cotton Kelly Green sweater was only $6.99 and perfectly on trend.

Jeans: Looking for that perfect, wider, straight-leg jean? The men’s section may just have what you’re looking for. I thrifted these men’s Levi’s about four years ago. They had the original tags on and fit me like a dream. Something to note with sizing when shopping men’s jeans: you are most likely going to need to go up a couple of sizes. Flip through the racks of jeans that are 1-3 sizes above your regular size.

Blazers: I now have three men’s wool blazers that have become staples in my wardrobe. A blazer in a lighter colour looks great for spring and can act as a jacket for the cooler days. Think navy and taupes. I’m a big fan of cuffing the sleeves to give the blazer a more relaxed look.

Button-up shirts: The button-up shirt is both a classic and having a surge in popularity at the moment. It’s an incredibly versatile piece that works year-round. Always seek out those natural fibres and don’t be afraid to go for a stripe or fun pattern. A lightweight cotton or linen button up is the perfect spring/summer layering piece.

Graphic Tees: Not all graphic tees are created equal. You will have to sift through many promo beer tees, family reunion tees, marathon shirts and cringy FBI (Female Body Inspector) shirts. Ick!  But, the sift is worth it when you find that perfectly broken in band tee or the sweetest cactus graphic tee. Don’t be afraid to give your tees a crop with a simple measure and cut. This way you get the length you want. The T-shirt racks are ones I check out every time I go to the thrift store because you never know what you might find.

Men’s ties: No, you don’t need to start wearing ties to the office, but a beautiful silk tie styled in a creative way can add real personality to your wardrobe. This silk paisley-print tie is an oversized bowtie. It’s the perfect way to add a fun pop of print to any outfit.
