Outfit Ideas For The Casino

April 21, 2023

Heading to the casino for the evening is something that only happens occasionally. You might have headed to Las Vegas for some real glitz, or Monte Carlo for a taste of the luxe life—or just a city over to try out the table games and slot machines.

What you are going to wear on a night out is always a big discussion—wearing a going-out top and jeans is enough for most places. But casinos often have a dress code in place.

If dressing up isn’t something that you enjoy doing, then you can skip it, put on your fluffy PJs, check out BonusFinder Canada for the best online casinos available—and play under blankets!

However, if you want to go out-out, and can’t wait to work that winged liner and heels, here is a quick guide to how you can dress for a casino.

Are there different dress codes at casinos?

Yes, there are a couple of different dress codes that you will see for most casinos. The higher end the casino, the more likely you will run into a strict dress code.

Here are some that you will see mentioned:

  • White Tie
  • Black Tie
  • Black Tie Optional
  • Semi Formal
  • Business Formal or Business Casual
  • Smart Casual

But what does each of those mean in terms of appropriate clothing?

White Tie

When you head to a high-end luxury casino in the most exclusive resorts, you will see white tie as the required attire. White tie is considered even more formal and glamorous than black tie.

White tie is all out glamor. To get an idea of what white tie would look like, start checking out casino movies where women are dripping in diamonds, diamantes, fur, huge jewelry pieces, and gloves. For the men, they will be expected to wear black dress coats with tails, wing collars, and bibbed tux shirts.

Ball gowns and floor-length gowns are commonplace when it comes to white tie.

Black Tie

Black tie is a little less glamorous—but there are still rules. Men will be expected to wear a tux (but you could rent one). Looking glamorous is a given for the women. The rule used to be that they had to wear sleeveless dresses, jewelry, gloves, and wraps. However, it is fine in most circumstances for women to wear cocktail dresses or a pantsuit so long as they are sophisticated in style.

Anything that is considered black tie would usually take place after 6 pm, but for special events or a standard dress code, black tie can be requested.

Where it says black tie optional, it means that you don’t have to wear a gown or a tuxedo if you don’t own one – instead, you should wear the most formal (and glamorous) items that you do have—cocktail dresses for women and for men a dark-toned suit, shirt, and a dress suit.

Semi Formal

Semi Formal is the space between casual and black tie. While it does have some elements of black tie—in general, it is more relaxed. Most of the time, semi-formal attire would be requested at morning, brunch, or lunchtime events.

Cocktail dresses and summer or afternoon dresses are requested for women – but they will still need to be reasonably smart. For men, a tailored look is important, and while you don’t need to buy or rent a tuxedo-wearing a jacket is a good idea.

Business Formal or Business Casual

You might find that this is a strange dress code request for a casino—but a surprising amount of business meetings will take place in a casino or the restaurant onsite. Business casual and business formal are both things that you could be seen in an office in or a meeting.

With business casual, you won’t be required to wear a blazer or a jacket in most instances. However, that may vary, and it is always worth checking what is expected from the casino you are considering going to. For men, good tie, smart shoes, and trousers are typically enough.

For women’s business casual or formal, a non-revealing dress, a pantsuit—tailored, heels, and understated accessories are great.

The small details are what will make or break an outfit for business, formal or casual.

Smart Casual

Smart casual is the one dress code that many people struggle with on an everyday basis. Smart casual usually includes smart wear with a pair of smart trainers.

A couple of safe options are chinos or smart trousers, loafers or Chelsea boots, a plain t-shirt, a blazer or sports jacket, and a shirt.

Unlike business casual and business formal, you can wear jeans – so long as they are smart and not ripped or loaded with logos.

A great rule to stick by is if you need clarification on the policy of the place you want to go to, check the website and give them a call.
