Top 5 Looks @ The Met Gala

May 3, 2023

The star-studded 2023 Met Gala took place on May 1 in New York City. This year’s annual events’ theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” honouring the late Lagerfeld and his accomplishments. The dress code complemented the theme, being “In honour of Karl.” Many were in attendance, but there were a few standouts. Before diving into the top five list, there were some honourable mentions. Longtime Chanel ambassador Kristen Stewart leaned into an androgynous look opting for a Chanel Resort 2017 suit in black and white. Other notable mentions were Anne Hathaway in Versace, Phoebe Bridgers in Tory Burch, Nicole Kidman in Chanel and Rihanna in Valentino. —Brieanna McCutcheon

Tems: Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems toyed with the structure of a gown made by Robert Wun. The classic black and white pallet was worn by many over the evening, honouring Karl, but Tems outfit straddled the line of whimsical yet traditional that was just superb. The outfit had a black bodice and a uniquely cut low skirt that folded over like a classic collared shirt. This outfit even had levels, with feathers flowing from the bust, the tops of Tems gloves and a fascinator-type hat adding volume. Her jewels were by Melissa Kaye.

Jeremy Pope: Actor Jeremy Pope hit the carpet with a more literal approach. Made by Balmain, again, we saw the classic black and white that Karl Lagerfeld used in his runway shows for Chanel. Pope dragged behind him a 30-foot-long cape with Lagerfelds face on it. The outfit took over 16,000 feet of silk chiffon to make, allowing Pope to shine. Given the length of the garment, Pope’s outfit created space for a solo photo op on the stairs.

Anok Yai: The American model wore a dress by Nepalese–American fashion designer Prabal Gurung. There was a classic traditional look with what appeared to be a birdcage over Anok’s eyes, but upon further inspection, the birdcage was a rendition of glasses. As for the central part of the dress, it took on the shape of a delicately crafted jellyfish which sparkled with every camera flash.

Eddie Redmayne: Actor Eddie Redmayne had a perfect couple moment on the carpet with his partner, Hannah Bagshawe. Dressed in Alexander McQueen, Redmayne arrived in a less-than-basic suit. Peals and silver chains were strategically placed on the suit jacket, hanging in perfection. As for his pants, a wide leg gave an unusual, refreshing look to his completed look.

Kim Kardashian: An authentic piece of walking artwork for the evening of festivities, Kim wore a look from Schiaparelli’s by Daniel Roseberry. The soft colours of blush satin and white pearls let the intricacy of the outfit take centre stage. Kim wore a moulded corset, something seeming to be a regular occurrence for the American socialite, but the main attraction wasn’t her hourglass figure. Instead, the whopping 50,000 freshwater pearls took around 1,000 hours to make and were the main attraction.
