It’s Getting Hot In Here! How To Summer-Proof Your Hair

June 8, 2023

Summer is here which means scorching temps and high humidity! Unfortunately, it can also mean chlorine-damaged, greasy, frizzy and dull hair. With this season’s social calendars filling up, you don’t want to risk a bad hair day ruining your plans. Thankfully, hair experts say there are some go-to tricks to summer-proof your mane and ensure hair woes don’t slow you down. Supercuts hair expert Donna Jordan says there are simple things anyone can do to keep hair healthy and looking fabulous. We chatted with her to learn more.

Please tell us a bit about yourself to start.

I started as a stylist in cosmetology in 1988. I always loved doing hair. I did hair for anyone who would let me and worked on hair and makeup in theater classes throughout school! I owned my own salon for 15 years, and now, I work with Supercuts as a VP of Operations. I have been a stylist for 34 years and still love getting behind the chair and taking care of the customer.

Summer is here, which means scorching temps and high humidity! What do these conditions mean for our hair?

High temps, the scorching sun and humidity can really damage your hair if you don’t protect it. UV rays especially damage your outer cuticle which means frizz. Humidity means added frizz! Be sure to use an anti-frizz product and keep your hair well moisturized. Use oils and shea butter to limit the frizz as well. Our trained Supercuts stylists can help you pick the right products for your hair.

If you have curly hair, the humidity may affect your locks a bit more. Keep doing anything that you’ve found works for limiting frizz and dry your hair carefully by squeezing water out but don’t dry roughly. If the frizz really bothers you, look into Keratin treatments.

Extra moisture and sweat can also make your hair deflate so wear your hair up if you know you’re going to get super sweaty.

What other summer activities (think: swimming) tend to do damage to our hair?

Swimming pools can dry out your hair quickly. Look for products that are specifically designed to hydrate swimmers’ hair. You can also use a swim cap to limit the damage.

If you’re going into the ocean frequently, don’t up your hair wash routine. This will dry out your hair. Washing your hair strips your scalp and strands of their natural oils which can lead to limp, dull hair.

What are some of your top go-to tricks to summer-proof our mane and ensure hair woes don’t slow us down?

Some helpful things to do are:

  • Get regular summer trims. Supercuts is an ideal place where you can go get a great cut at an affordable price. You can check in ahead of time on the app or website, or just walk right in.
  • Use UV protection or a hat to protect your hair from the sun.
  • Don’t overwash your hair. I know it’s tempting when you’re getting sweaty but it actually makes things worse.
  • Start doing a deep conditioning routine.
  • Avoid using any heat tools. They’ll only dry your hair out more.
  • Utilize oils and serums.
  • Use haircare products for colored hair if you have it.
  • Keep your hair up if you’re going to get sweaty.
  • Stay hydrated! Keeping your body well-hydrated will keep your hair hydrated.

How do you suggest we keep our hair healthy and looking fabulous, without too much effort?

There are so many twists, quick ponytails, braids and easy clip tricks your stylist can show you for three-minute hairdos that look like you spent an hour.

While wearing your hair up, don’t be afraid to add a little extra leave-in treatment to your hair for on-the-go conditioning. If you will be out in the sun or enjoying water activities, it will double as a sun protectant.

What are some of your favorite summer hair products to use?

The Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Hemp Multitasking spray is incredible. I also love the It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in spray. It’s easy to use and helps smooth hair and eliminates frizz. The Super Skinny Serum by Paul Mitchell is great to provide slip for easy combing and an immediate intense shine to the hair. After all, shiny hair is healthy-looking hair!
